WAITAKI HYDRO WORKS
invitations to opening NEGLECT OF COUNCILLORS ALLEGED "I think that the whole council should have had an invitation and that it should not have been confined to the Mayor and the DeputyMayor," declared Cr. H. W. Wise at the meeting' of the Riccarton Borough Council last evening, after the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. R. G. Malcolmson) had reported attending the opening of the Waitaki hydro-elec-tric works with the MayO.r (Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P.). Cr. Wise said that the average member of a local body did as much work as the chairman, and an open invitation should have been given to .councillors. It was not expected that all would have accepted, because a council would not have wished to put the Government to the extra expense, but members who were in a position to go should have had the opportunity or attending. • in past years councillors received invitations to the annual inspections of the harbour and the Waimakariri, but now they are being sadly neglected, and a few privileged ones are enjoying the luxuries," continued Cr. Wise. "I am very dispppointed that the council did not receive an open invitation. All of the council might then have been present, and there need have been no extra cost to the Government." Cr. S. B. Kershaw. Let us have the whole thing over again and we will all attend. Cr. Wise added that the council should arrange for members to see the works at a later date and pay for the visit out of their own pockets. The town clerk (Mr R. Sarjeant) later explained that the invitation was to the chairman of the electricity committee, and Cr. Malcolmson attended in that capacity. Mr Kyle, the Mayor of the borough, attended as a member of Parliament.
