MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE
—♦ - LAW AND PRACTICE IX RUSSIA] "In the Soviet Unions everyone who' dor?; Iho same work, whether man, I woman, or child, receives the samcj wage;;." said Mr Max Riske last even-j ing to a meeting or (he Friends of i Hie Soviet. Union, in their rooms in I Manchester .street. Mr Riske .said that marriages in | Russia, were of two kinds, unregis-j tcred, and registered in a bureau. The] people were, nowever, encouraged to I register, though the same divorce laws held in each cafe. 'Die only bond in marriage was tin. do: ire to live to-, ;;cther. The Hus.-:an's marriage age limit was to. though they were en-j .•ouraged not to marry lilt Ihcy worci "4. All lhat a marriage in Russia I really consisted of was two people living together more or less pcrma-| neiitly Both the parents under tins system were .liable for any children in proportion to the amount of pay each received, and further than this each was responsible for the other. The woman was not required to tr:ke her husband's name. Capitalistic states were it ill backward in divorce and made parents stick together when they would be happier separated, said Mr Riske. In Russia divorce was run more or less on the same lines as marriage. It there were no children and a woman wanted a divorce, whether her marriage was registered or unregistered, she slated her position to the registrar, with the help of witnesses if she pleased, and, if the registrar after due enquiry found that, there were sufficient grounds, the husband would receive a notice to tell him that he was 'divorced. In Moscow, Mr Riske stated, there was a lower divorce rate than in New York. On the conclusion of his address a banner which had been worked by the Christchurch branch was displayed and presented to Mr Riske to accompany the delegation to Moscow leav- ; in;.', early this month.
