* — THURSDAY (.Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) REMANDED An elderly man, whose name was suppressed, was remanded until September 6 on a charge of attempted suicide. Chief Detective W. H. Dunlop said that the accused man was at present in hospital. CHARGES DISMISSED Two charges of receiving stolen goods, brought against a youth 12 months ago and adjourned, were dismissed under section 18 of the Offenders Probation Act. Chief Detective Bunlop said that during the 12 months' adjournment the youth had done extremely well. The youth's name was suppressed. ASSAULT IN HOTEL . • Robert John Leslie Coleman, a baker, aged 40, was charged with assaulting Frederick Foulkes, and with using insulting language. Sub-Inspector J. Powell said that Foulkes went into the Phoenix Hotel at Papanui and fell into conversation with another man. Coleman then came up at his back, caught hold of his neck, and looking into his face used the insulting language of which complaint was made. Coleman had no reason to do this. He had never had conversation with Foulkes nor had anything to do with him. Coleman was fined £1 on the first charge and ordered to pay costs on the second, in default seven days' imprisonment. OBSCENE LANGUAGE For using obscene language Francis Augustus McPhee, aged 28, a shearer, of Fitzgerald avenue, was convicted and fined £2 and cost;;, in default 14 days' imprisonment. THEFT John Jackson Corbeti, a labourer, aged 29, pleaded guilty to the theft, at Auckland in December, of £5 in money and a cheque for £4, the property of Horace Charles Fair. He was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. Chief Detective Dunlop said that the accused was at present serving a sentence of seven months for an offence in Dunedin involving false pretences. He had been befriended by Fair, who had given him lodgings for a night, and accused had stolen the money and the cheque during Fair's absence. LICENSING OFFENCE Clifton James Ward, a relief wurker, charged with being on the licensed premises of the Excelsior Hotel after hours, was convicted and lined I!0s and costs. TWO OFFENCKS James Logie, a showman, was convicted of wilfully damaging a cubicle, valued at £l, the property of Eric Austin Shaw, and of behaving in a disorderly manner in Manchester street, on August 12. On the first charge he was fined 20s and costs, in default 14 days' imprisonment, and on the second lie was lined £il and costs, in default one month's imprisonment. CIVIL COURT 'Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.i CLAIM AGAINST TENANT Thomas Bradley (Mr E. A. Lee> claimed from A. H. Andreassend (Mr 11. O. Jacobsen) the sum of £9, of which £5 was for damage allegedly done by the defendant to buildings owned by the plaintiff, £3 for rent, and £1 for mesne profits said to be due. Judgment was given for 1.:: 10s and costs. The plaintiff was non-suited on the claim for £5.
