AMERICAN MANUFACTURERS EXPERIMENT
I VALUE OF BRIGHT PAINTS Under the title of "Forging Ahead During Depression," the United States ■ Department of Commerce in a recent publication devotes considerable space to the value of colour in paint in main, taining or increasing sales. Recently a western manufacturing J concern, the publication stated, in order to maintain payrolls, to keep many of Its men busy during an otherwise dull period in production, employed them in painting Its plant interior and equipment with what might appear as gay, bright colours. Employees immediately, it was reported, took a new pride in their surroundings and voluntarily kept the j machines and floor clean. What was j more surprising, the new colours be--1 came an important factor in the profitt able operation of the business, j It was found that eye strain was re- , duced with a resultant decrease in re- . jected products and damaged materials. Older employees were able to i compete better with younger and more I steady hands and brighter eyes. Aci cidents were cut to a minimum. II Morale was improved and fatigue and ' nervous tension considerably lessened.
