ASHBURTON PERSONAL Mr C. Gordon Kirk, of Nelson, who has been judging the elocution section of the Ashburton Competitions Society's festival, will leave for Wellington this morning. Mr Ernest Jenner, of Christchurch, vocal and instrumental judge, will return to Christchurch to-day, and will leave for Akaroa to-morrow to continue lectures on music to primary school teachers, under the scheme of refresher courses being held throughout the South Island. Advice was received by the High School Board of Governors yesterday that Mr H. R. C. McElrea had been appointed a representative of the Canterbury Education Board on the board in place of Mr R. The quarterly meeting of the Star ! of Ashburton Lodge, No. 14, U.A.0.D., was held on Monday evening, the A.D., Bro. A. I. Garrioek, presiding. One candidate was initiated, and three proposed for membership. The board of management upheld the D.P.'s ruling that honorary members were entitled to vote at the election of candidates. Bro. G. Bowman was nominated as a member of the panel of auditors. The secretary was instructed to invite the Foresters' Lodge to a card match on October n. The Royal Arch Chapter advised that a meeting would be held as soon as a convenient date could be arranged. Labour Day Gala The first meeting of the sports seclion of the forthcoming Labour Day gala was held on Monday evening. Mr J. C. C. McLachlan was pppointed chairman, and Mr E. R. Easterbrook acting-secretary for the meeting. Last year's programme with the inclusion of n running championship event instead of a handicap event, was apnrcvcd for submission to the executive. It was agreed to recommend that the Highland dance programme and prizes should be the same as last year. It was agreed to recommend the executive to receive Messrs D. Smith and R. Flunket as a deputation to consider the advisability of including axemen's events at the gala. Men's Hockey Sub-Association A special meeting of the management committee of the Mid-Canter-bury Men's Hockey Sub-Association was held on Monday evening, the president, Mr E. M. Gabit.es, presiding.

The Canterbury Hockey Association wrote stating that owing to the arrangements made with the Rugby Union not to play any matches during or after the Australian match on Saturday next, it would be impossible to play representative matches on that date. It was decided to request the Canterbury Association to send teams to play here On September 8. Owing to the Australian match next Saturday, it was found impossible to play a fourth round, and it was decided to close the senior competition and declare St. Andrew's the winner. It was decided to draw the attention of the public to the fact "that women's and men's hockey in Ashburton was controlled, by separate organisations. Ashburton. East School A meeting of the Ashburton East School committee was held on Monday evening, the chairman, Mr W. S. Kerr, presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with Miss B. IT. L. Brown in the death of her mother. The Canterbury Education Board wrote stating that the school was constituted a main school at the beginning of 188 G. Messrs W. H. Robinson and H. W. Sherratt were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. The headmaster (Mr S. G. Macfarlane) reported that the term began with a roll of 227 boys and 218 girls. and ended with one of 235 boys and 222 girls. For the term the average was only 386, compared with 416 in the first term. The end-of-term concert resulted in £ll being raised. Miss L. Robinson had joined the staff, and Mr W. E. Langford was on sick leave. The appointment of Mr A. J. Rawstorne, B.A. (headmaster of the Lowcliff school) as assistant-master was approved. It was decided to thank the headmaster and staff for their efforts in organising the concert. METHVEN The fortnightly meeting of the Methven Men's Club was held in All Saints' Schoolroom, when there was a good attendance. The Rev. E. A Osmers presided. After the usual sports period, a musical programme was given. The recently-formed Methven Pipe Band gave its initial public performance. Other items were given by Messrs J. Mcintosh (violin solo), D. Petrle and J. Mcintosh (violin duet), R. Hancis and W. R. Owers (songs), and th/ Rev. W. E. Moore (pianoforte solo). Pipe selections were played bv Messrs R. G. Mauger, C. Petrie, and R. Petrie. Mr Moore gave a lecturette on old time music, illustrating the works of Handel and Mozart by gramophone records.
