BYRD'S FORTUNES IMPROVE
* GROUNDED AEROPLANES SAFE TRANSPORT OF SUPPLIES BY TRACTORS [By Radio—Special to the United Press Association, Copyright. From the Byrd Expedition.] (Received March 23, 9.5 p.m.) March 23. The fortunes of the expedition at Little America have brightened considerably. The two grounded aeroplanes have returned safely to the camp, and the tractors transporting supplies for the advanced base have successfully pushed 100 miles south of the camp to deposit their supplies in preparation for the drive to the Ross Barrier for the esiaolishment of the winter outpost. This is the first mass mechanised advance in the history of polar exploration. Four tractors have been used and only one has broken down, despite the blinding gales and a temperature of 40 degrees below vero. The broken-down tractor is only temporarily out of comj mission.
