MEETING OF BOARD OF • DIRECTORS Tne monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Young Women's Christian Association was held recently, when in the absence of the president, Mrs E. D. Moslev was appointed to the chair. The meeting opened with a reading from the World's Prayer Circle leafiet of January 1, issued from Geneva. A letter was received from Miss Gertrude Owen, formerly general secretary of the Young Women's Christian Association in Christchurch. and now working in Singapore. Upon return from a year's furlough which will be spent in England and Europe, Miss Owen will be in charge of association centres in Malaya, travelling from one to the other. Recently Miss Owen organised an international exhibition in which representatives of 19 countries participated, in au sections vying with each other in beauty, colour, and interest, exhibiting arts and crafts, customs and costumes. Interesting reports were presented by different departments of the as- | soeiation. one of the outstanding events j being the formation of the Girls' Em- j ployment Committee which will re- j Jicvc the Young Women's Christian , Association of much responsibility although the headquarters will still be within the building, with the general secretary (Miss E. S. Batt) as organising secretary for the committee. The hostel committee reported that a reduction in tariff had been made to meet the requirements of' young girls who were unable to pay the higher rate. Senior clubs had begun regular meetings, and to those already existing tramping and folk dancing clubs had been added, as well as several basketball teams. The opportunity courses were reported to be running on very much the same lines as last year and this group, too, hoped to enter a basketball team in the weekly competitions. The girls' department presented a very satisfactory report; many new members had joined and the Mothers' Club had resumed its meetings with a programme of talks, the first being bv Mrs W. H. Dixon, on "The Evolution of the Home," and the second by Mrs Strausmeyer on her native countrv. Austria. The World Fellowship Committee reported that interesting letters had been received by members of the Correspondence Circle from Young Women's Christian Association members in France, Austria, and China. It had been arranged that members collect news of international importance, also pictures which could be displayed on a special board to arouse interest in other countries. In addition to the letters, a competition, "Know your Association," on the lines of a spelling-bee, would be organised after Easter. Finance The finance committee reported that the position was not very favourable at present, and that it was necessary that funds be raised in the near future. It was hoped that the folk' oancing fole to be held at Bishopscourt on Saturday, April 14, would be a great success. An interesting programme was promised, including items by pupils from the West Christchurch School, a maypole dance by association members, as variations from the folk dancing competition. Tiie general secretary reported that she was at present busy with the popular girl contest which was to commence shortly after Easter. ! The members' council reported that ; activities had commenced and they recommended that girls take an active : part in the Youth for Christ Campaign : which was to be held in May under ihc auspices of the Christian Youth Council. After discussion on the .Remits to be presented to the annual Conference of the National Council of Women it was decided that time would not permit for consideration of these in detail so that delegates to the National Council were lelt to speak for the association on these mutters, using , their own discretion.
