Mr F. W. Johnston, president of the South Island Motor Union, left for Wellington last evening. He is expected to return to Christchurch to-morrow morning. Mr Percy Lister, managing director of the English engineering firm of R. A. Lister and Company, Ltd., who is making a business tour of New Zealand, left last evening for Wellington. Mr E. J. Bell, librarian of the Christchurch Public Library, who has been on a tour of the United States, will resume duties on March 1.

' Mr H. B. Best left yesterday morning on a business visit to Invercargill. Mr J. McNair, district engineer of railways, left for Wellington last evening to attend the annual departmental conference of district engineers from all parts of the Dominion. He will be away for about a week.

Mr C. H. Burson, president of the Manufacturers' Association, who has been spending a recuperative holiday in Hawke's Bay, returned to Christchurch at the week-end very much improved in health.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr P. J. Molloy was passed at the meeting of the Christchurch Footwear Repairers' Association last evening. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. The Hon. Alexander Shaw, chairman of the P. and O. Company, who is on a visit to New Zealand, will arrive in Christchurch from Wellington on Thursday. While in Christchurch he will hold a conference with the board of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Later, accompanied by Lady Margaret Shaw and their daughter, Miss Jean Shaw, he will visit Dunedin. Sir Daniel Levy, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the Wanganella. He is accompanied by his sister, Miss R. Levy, and they intend to spend three months in the Dominion.— Press Association.

Sympathy with the relatives of Mr E. H. Healey, who died recently, was expressed at the meeting of the Christchurch Bowling Centre last evening. The president (Mr F. D. Muirson)' said Mr Healey had been a past president of the centre and a highly esteemed player. Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., who has been appointed Government commissioner for the civil re-establish-ment of disabled soldiers, and who at present is inspecting the work of the Auckland committee, is expected to visit Christchurch next week to inspect the work of the Christchurch committee.

Mr Percy R. Purser, for more than 20 years town clerk for the Hastings Borough Council, has tendered his resignation, to take effect from April 30. In accepting the resignation the council decided to place on record an appreciation of Mr Purser's services and to present him with a testimonial under the sea] of the council.

The Rev. F. IT. Bailey, minister of the Presbyterian Church .at Hanmer Springs, will take up thiem'

charge of St. Martins parish early in March. Mr Bailey has' for nearly 20 years been doing home mission work, and has held charges in various parts of both North and South Islands. He will be succeeded at Hanmer by the Rev. Mr Sedgwick, of New Plymouth.

Reference was made by the Rev. F. T. Read, president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, at the meeting of the executive of that body last night, to the illness of Mr F. Z. D. Ferriman, and he f>nd other members spoke of the £reat interest taken by Mr Ferriman in the welfare of returned soldiers, and of the valuable services rendered by him to them. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr Ferriman.
