MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON PERSONAL Mr S. Coxhead, of Geraldine, has been transferred to Ashburton as the representative of Messrs A. S. Paterson and Co.. Ltd., in succession to Mr T. S. J. Doherty, who now has charge of the Blenheim district. Mr A. Gregory, a member of the South Canterbury Mortgagors' Adjustment Commission, will leave for Timaru this morning to attend a sitting of the commission. Fishing Trcu! up to 71b and 41b in weight were taken during the week-end from the Ashburton and Rangitata rivers respectively. Both rivers were in fishing order although the Ashburton was the better. No big catches were made at either river, but some heavy fish were taken from the Ashburton, several of the trout weighing up to 61b. The best bag was three, two fourpounders and one seven-pounder. About 15 rods were out on the Rangitata river,, and a number of small trout was taken. Very few local anglers visited the Rakaia river during the week-end and from the very few reports available nothing of any consequence wat, caught. Hospital Board At the monthly meeting of the Hospital Board, held yesterday, there were present—Messrs W. G. Gallagher (chairman), F. Frampton, G. S. Hardy, W. Bryant, R. Oakley, W. H. Wilkinson. C. A. Campion, and Dr. J. R. Wells. The financial statement showed that there was a credit balance of £194 18s 2d at January 31. The report of the medical superintendent (Dr. A. J. Mason) stated that there were 49 patients in the hospital at the end of December. During January, 86 were admitted and 85 were discharged, leaving 50 in the institution. There were 153 outpatients treated, 71 X-ray examinations. 331 massage treatments. three plaster operations, and 59 surgical operations. The report of the matron (Miss E. J. Watt) stated that Sister Dearsley had returned from annual leave. Nurse Wilson was on holiday. Nurse Skinner would commence training at Malvern Home. Nurses Bilborough and McFarlane were leaving the staff. The report from Malvern Home slated that 12 patients were admitted in January and the same number was discharged, leaving three. A total of 29 ante-natal patients visited the home. Nurse Bolton had discontinued her training. Nurse Young was on annua] leave. For the charitable relief committee. Mr Bryant reported that £lO3 had been distributed in charitable relief during last month. Among the cases dealt with was a large number of men off the road. The Hospital Boards' Association forwarded a suggested scale of X-ray and radium fees for all New Zealand hospitals. Dr. Mason suggested a sliding scale of charges for Ashburton according to the type of X-ray work. Dr. Wells gave notice to move that Dr. Mason's recommendation be adopted. The Department of Health advised that all hospital boards should not commit themselves in restoring salary reductions made in 1932-33, but should await advice from the department in March, when a definite guide would be given. had noted the very satisfactory position of the Ashburton Hospital Board's revenue and expenditure. | At the conclusion of the meeting the board inspected the new shadowless light which has been installed in the operating theatre. Swimming Centre The Ashburton Amateur Swimming. Centre met last evening, the chairman (Mr J. C. C. McLachlan) presiding. Mr T. S. J. Doherty, who has been secretary and treasurer for the last three years, tendered his resignation, owing to his transfer to Picton. The resignation was accepted with regret and it was decided to place on record appreciation of Mr Doherty's services to the sport, and to the centre. Mr H. P. Milson was appointed secretary and treasurer. The local consul, Mr A. Thomson, reported in complimentary terms upon the success of the first annual carnival of the Mount Somers Amateur Swimming Club. Arrangements for an inter-club carnival at the Tinwald Swimming Bath on Tuesday evening were left in the hands of Messrs Milson and "L. Crooks. Cricket Association The management committee of the Ashburton Cricket Association met last evening, Mr R. H. Biggar presiding. It was decided to cancel booking of the domain oval for the match with the Australians, owing to the abandonment of the tour. The secretary (Mr S. M. Cassidy) reported that the fifth round of the competition would be completed on February 24. The junior competition had been practically finished and the third round had been concluded. Ashburton B had a lead of three points from Rakaia in the senior competition, but Rakaia had one match in hand. , . ~ . It was decided to play a sixth round and to transpose the draw so that Ashburton B would meet Rakaia in the senior grade and Kia Ora would meet Technical in the junior grade on March 3. The chairman said that the competitions could then be closed virtually at any time. Athletics The committee of the Ashburton Athletic and Cycling Club met last evening, Mr H. D. Johnston presiding. Mr J. Connolly, M.P., wrote accepting the position of patron and enclosed a cheque for £1 Is. It was decided to thank Mr Connolly for his gift. It was decided to run the 10 miles cycle road race for the Boomerang cup round the Netherby block course on March 1. and to hold the one-mile district cycle track race for the same cup. at the club's forthcoming meeting. It was agreed to include a baby show, half-mile women's cycle race, and children's events in the programme for the athletic meeting next month. Messrs P. C. Lucas (ChristchurcrO and G. Tozcr (Timaru) were appointed cycling and running handicappers respectively for the meeting. It was reported that Mr J. C. C. McLachlan and the gala officials would control the sports programme. LISMORE Ilr Corbett has returned from Wellington, where he spent part of his vacation, the early part being spent at Waikuku. The oat crops have practically all been stacked, and a large amount at the wheat is in stook waiting foi favourable threshing conditions. There is also a fair proportion of wheat still standing, several farmers waiting for header-harvesters. Although some of the crops in the district toward Mayfield were struck with the heavy hailstorm some weeks ago, those in the lower part of the district are looking well, and give promise of good yields, even although some of the grain is lying on the ground, following the activities of the hessian fly or . the wire-worm,.

MOUNT SOMERS The Mount Somors Swimming Club held its first annual swimming carnival at Mount Somers Domain Baths on Saturday afternoon, before a large attendance from all parts of the country. Unfortunately cool weather prevailed. Competitors were present from the Ashburton, East Ashburton, Methven, and Ruapuna Clubs. The chief event was the 100 yards Friedlander Cup relay race (open to Ashburton County swimmers only), which was won by the Methven team. The programme was arranged by the Ashburton Centre, and the events controlled by centre officials. Exhibition events were given by J. Hardie, of East Ashburton. At the conclusion the Rev. E. A. Osmers presented the cup to the winning team, and thanked the Ashburton Centre officials for their assistance. As this was the club's first carnival, he hoped it would be the forerunner of many more, and that the people of the district would give the support and patronage the club deserved, in fostering swimming in the district. Supper was provided and served by the women. The week-end saw a welcome return to iine weather. Sunday was warm and sunny, and after a weeks stoppage some farmers resumed harvesting operations. Morrow 3. Schoolgirls' dive: Isobel Harvey 1, Joan Shimmin 2. There was a good attendance at the dance held in aid of the club's funds. Music was supplied by Mrs Shimmin, I an J an extra by Miss Gwen Ross. The continuous overcast and drizzly weather which prevailed during the week was a considerable hindrance to farmers harvesting, and soil cultivation is at a standstill.
