AMURI COUNTY COUNCIL

♦ At the monthly meeting of the Amuri County Council there were present:—Councillors M. Bethell (chairman), H. R. Davison, J. J. Duncan, R. Mercer, and J. J. Gallagher. It was resolved that the chairman represent the council at the conference convened by the Canterbury Roadside Beautifying Society to be held on March 7. The Unemployment Board asked for the council's co-operation in a scheme for immediate utilisation of unemployed relief labour in saving cocksfoot seed from roadsides and waste places. The chairman reported having replied that the quantity of cocksfoot growing on roads in the county did not warrant any action being taken. Mr G. Reid wrote drawing the council's attention to the presence of a number of Alsatian dogs in the county and suggesting that the council place a prohibitive tax on them. It was decided to reply that the council was in sympathy with liis letter, but that the maximum fee allowed by the ' Dog Registration Act, 1908, was fixed for such dogs in the county. It was resolved that a letter be forwarded to the member of Parliament for the district stating that these dogs were a menace to sheep and suggesting th3t the maximum fee be increased to £2 2s. The Boy Scouts' Association was granted £1 Is for the year. Accounts amounting to £895 17s 7d were passed for payment. It was resolved that the member for the district be written to asking him to draw the attention of the Commissioner of State Forests to the amount of damage being done to the Balmoral State Forest by sheep grazing there.
