AVONSIDE ORCHESTRA

♦ THIRD ANNUAL CONCERT TO-NIGHT "" Such has been the progress in recent years of mechanical music that there has been a tendency for the "personal performance" to slip into the background. Primarily for the purpose of counteracting this drift, an orchestra was formed in the Avonside district three years ago by Mr Ralph Lilly, who was then 14 years of age. Now he has a combination of 32 players, and the third annual concert will be presented in the Avonside parish hall to-night. This orchestra has grown from smalt beginnings. Mr Lilly gathered together a number of friends from the Christchurch Boys' High School and from the Avonside church choir, and. with the assistance of a number of professional players, has evolved an orchestra capable of producing some excellent works. Naturally, such names as Offenbach, Elliott, Marzian, Heidsfield, Fucik, Ketelby, Schubert, Strauss, and Gounod figure on the programmes, and, with the assistance of other instrumental and vocal artists, the annual concert in Avonside is looked forward to with a great deal of pleasure.
