SHIPPING RETIREMENT The retirement of Mr James Smith, superintending engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company, is announced. Mr Smith entered the service of the Union Company nearly 49 years ago, and has been superintending engineer of the company's head office since 1920. His retirement will take effect from March 31. Mr Smith joined the Union Company in 18G5 when the ships of the Black Diamond fleet were taken over, and in the following years he served successively as chief engineer in the Moa, Ohau, Ovalau, Hauroto, Monowai, and Moeraki. In 1907 he was appointed superintending engineer at Auckland, and after serving as actingsuperintending engineer in the company's head office for a period he was transferred in 1912 to the Sydney office as superintending engineer. On May 1, 1920, he relinquished that position and became the head office superintending engineer. Mr Smith will be succeeded by Mr R. L. Gillies, the present assistant superintending engineer. Mr Gillies's position will be taken by Mr A. L. Gatland. chief engineer of the Rangatira. Although relinquishing his official position. Mr Smith will continue in the service of the Union Companv in an advisory capacity until the end of this year. PERSONAL Commander R. L. F. Hubbard R.N.R., is in command of the R.M.S'. Orsova, which left London on February 3. Mr A. E. Webster is relieving Mr W. C. Watt as second mate of the Port Waikato. Mr R. F. Dewar has been appoints second mate of the Wainui, vice Mill. Barnard. Air J. B. Campbell has been engaged as third engineer on the Monowai, relieving Mr E. M. Denby. Mr E. Dovcy has been appointed extra officer of the Waipiata. Captain R. Pearson has taken command of the Kailoa, relieving Captain Wahlslrom, who is now master of the Titoki. ORARI DELAYED The loading of the Orari at Wellington has been delayed by recent rains, and she will now leave for Lyttelton to complete until to-day. She will leave Lyttelton about Wednesday for London, Avonmouth, Liverpool, and Glasgow.
