THE EAST COAST RAILWAY
: DESIRE FOR EXTENSION j DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON | GOVERNMENT I ! iPRr,S.I ABSOC-UTIOH IBLEGRiM.t WAIROA, February 9. The general committee concerned with the completion of the East Coast railway from Napier to Gisborne met at Wairoa to-day. The discussions were not open to the press, but after a long deliberation the following resolution was carried unanimously:— "After a thorough investigation and consideration of the question of ! the completion of the East Coast railway, the committee is of the opinion that representations should be made to the Government immediately to complete the Napier-Wai-kokopu section of the East Coast ! railway."
A deputation consisting of the Mayors of Hastings, Napier, Wairoa, and Gisborne, with Messrs Richmond and Chadwick. representing the freezing industry, is to proceed to Wellington at an early date to put the arguments in favour of completion before the Government. Though the decision may prevent Poverty Bay from being linked up for some time, the Gisborne delegates heartily supported the proposal, as they realised that the only chance of .securing a railway connexion was by having the line completed i.o Waikokopti in the meantime. This was taken as a strong indication that every effort would be made to complete tho line before considering having the work carried out by private enterprise, which does not appear to meet with lavour by the committee.
