BOROUGH WORK

During the week the council teams have been engaged in carting sand from George street and the Esplanade to the Withelt's Island Reserve. Clay has been carted for footpaths in Jubilee avenue and Beresford street. The manuka fences at North Beach have been repaired. The paths round the South Brighton Surf Club pavilion have now been attended to. The tractor has been busy grading screenings in Racecourse road, Saltaire street, Bridge street, Estuary road, and Richmond terrace. Municipal Band On Thursday evening, at a social evening tendered to him by the New Brighton Municipal Band, the patron of the band, Mr A. W. Owles, presented the band with a framed photograph of himself. Before handing his gift to the conductor (Mr J. A. Nuttail) he told many amusing incidents of the early days of the band. The Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) referred to the manner in which Mr Owles had fathered the band from its infancy. . He had never failed the band. Mr A. E. Lawry also spoke. The councillors present were: W. E. Wilkins, J. Orsborn, J. S. Ainsworth, J. K. Worrall. T. E. Thomson, R. E. Holloway, and W. Hulmc. Relief Workers The number of relief workers shows a decrease from 348 last week to 337 for this week. Building Permits Six building permits have been issued for January to a total value of £B3O 18s. The total permits issued to January 31 are 121, to the value of £12,551 3s, compared with 52 permits of a value of £4965 8s for the same period last year. Picnic The New Brighton School Committee has decided to hold the annual picnic on February 28. The North Brighton School Committee, which had decided to hold the picnic on February 21, has accordingly altered its date to February 28, so that thai day may be declared a borough holiday. The New Brighton committee will meet on Monday evening and decide where the picnic will be held. Social Evenings Mrs Christie was the main prizewinner at the bowling club's weekly progressive whist evening on Wednesday. The Returned Soldiers' Association s weekly card evening and dance, held in the Oasi.s Hall on Wednesday, resulted in Mrs Breitmeyer and Miss A. Skipworth and Messrs Rawnsley and Butterworth being the winners at cards. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs Philpolt and Air Skipworth. The dance music was played bv Mrs Fuller and Mr R. F. Stokes. Mr S. Hamilton acted as master of ceremonies. The winners at the New Brighton School Committee's weekly euchre were Mrs M. Moses, Mis H. A. Sclfc. Mrs R. Power. Mr J. Mcrritt. Mr R. Campbell. Mrs G. Cattermole. A competition was won by Mr D. S. Turner.
