STORE COMPLETED
EARTHQUAKE-PROOF STRUCTURE Founded more than 50 years ago the drapery business house of T. Armstrong and Co., Ltd., continues to grow and expand with the exigencies of bigger turnover based on service. The latest addition to the Colombo street store on the Armagh street frontage at a cost of £12,000 is now finished. This addition serves the end of the firm in providing more accommodation, while at the same time improving the architectural features of Armagh street, which has developed latterly as a busy shopping area. The additional two-storey frontage is in concrete and is earthquake proof.
The founders of this growing business were Mr and Mrs T. Armstrong, sen., mother and father of the present managing director, Mr Albert Edward Armstrong, who is carrying out progressively the sound tradition set by his parents. The two big stores occupy five frontages, namely, Armagh street, Colombo street, Oxford terrace, High street, and Madras street. The stores occupy an area of about four acres, and employment is given to a staff of 350, including factories and workrooms.
