ASHBURTON MOTOR-CYCLE CLUB The committee of the Ashburton Motor Club met on Tuesday evening, when Mr R. P. Chibnall presided. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs W. J. bailey, G. T. Clarke, and J A. Crowe was appointed to present a full report at the next meeting upon the advisability of forming a light-car section of the club. The question of formulating a more definite financial policy was discussed, and it was decided that members of the committee should each give in writing to the secretary their views of,the best means of using any surplus funds. , , Final arrangements were made and officials appointed for the social pillion climb. Rainfall. Following the north-west weather conditions on Monday and Tuesday morning, there was a change on Tuesday evening, when rain fell _ intermittently during the night, 48 points being recorded up to 9 a.m. yesterday. There was no sign of a clearance last evening. Fire Brigade. The annual meeting of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening. Superintendent T. P. Barber presided. The report of the foreman stated that there were 18 fire alarms during the year, classified as follows: Fences and rubbish 8, chimneys 2, electric motor 1, false alarm 1, out of district 2, fires in buildings 4. The present strength of the brigade was 17. Other statistics were as follows: • Average attendance at fires 14, alarms given by bell 5, alarms given by telephone 13J estimated: value of buildings endangered £2450, estimated value of contents endangered £1450, estimated loss on buildings £6O, estimated loss on contents £lO. . ... The balance-sheet showed a creait of £44 IBs. • „ Officers were elected as follows. Superintendent, Mr T. P. Barber; firs lieutenant, Mr L. Kidd; second lieutenant, Mr W. Tilley; secretary ana treasurer, Mr C. Solway, sen.; foreman, Mr H. Hefford; junior foreman, Mr J. Hickey; committee, Messrs Barber, Kidd, Tilley, Solway, Gibson, W. Jary, and Preddy; finance committee, Messrs Gibson. Jary, and Preddy, auditors, Messrs J. Hickey and JDonn. . . . Lieutenant L.
