MONTHLY MEETING A meeting of the standing committee. a meeting of the board, and the annual meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board were all held yesterday. The following were present: Messrs W. G. Gallagher (chairman), W. K. McAlpine, E. J. Howard, M.P., R. T. McMillan, W. J. Walter, H. M. Chrystall F. E. Sutton, W. T. Lester, J. Leslie, J. W. Bowden, and Captain H. Monro. Additions to the freezing accommodation of the cool stores were approved at an estimated cost of £2OO. Finance Committee. The report of the? finance committee slated that it had examined the prospectuses of the loans conversions from the Ashburton Power Board and the Christchurch Tramway Board, and recommended that details of the reinvestment of special funds in those loans be left in the hands of the chairman and the treasurer. The committee recommended that discharge of a debenture for £IOOO of the Southland Electric Power Board, now held by special renewal *fund, and ordinarily due on May 1, 1945, be accepted. The recommendations were adopted. Treasurer's Statement. The statement of the treasurer for December and January showed that the receipts in December were £755G Is Bd, and in January £8298 16s lid, compared with £0743 18s 3d in December, 1932, and £5742 15s 8d in January, 1933, an increase for the two months of £3359 4s 3d. Imports during Decefrnber totalled 31,325 tons, compared with 24,911 tons in December, 1932, and exports totalled 17,418 tons, as against 10,068 tons in December, 1932. In January, imports were 29,120 tons, compared With 17,762 lons in January, 1933, and exports were 16,748 tons, compared with 15,739 tons in January, 1933. The statement was adopted. Harbourmaster's Report. The report of the harbourmaster (Captain J. F. Crawford) stated that during December, 132 trading vessels, representing 197,808 tons, entered the port. During January 117 trading vessels, representing 176,466 tons, entered the port. The report was adopted. Engineer's Report. The report of the engineer (Mr P. W. Fryer) stated: Dredging—After completion of the annual overhaul and survey, the suction dredge Canterbury resumed work on December 6. During the remainder of the period she was engaged in the outer channel, whence 166,557 yards of spoil were removed and in addition to this 30,030 yards were taken from the open parts of the inner harbour, making a total of 196,587 yards. During the same period the grab dredge le Wliaka was engaged in deepening the berths at No. 4 jetty, No. 6 jetty, No. 1 breastwork, and also did some work in the turning basin. The total quantity of-spoil lifted was 7000 tons. Reconstruction of Oil Tankers' Wharf—A further shipment of piles and timber was received and the work of reconstruction has been commenced by building a skeleton extension to the width of the wharf, against which vessels will be berthed during the reconstruction.

The Bluff Harbour Board wrote inviting the Lyttelton Board's co-opera-tion in urging upon the Government the necessity for the reinstatement of Iho Melbourne-Hobart-South Island passenger steamer service. The secretary stated that lie had asked the Bluff Board what assistance was desired from the Government, and a reply was received to the effect that the Government should be asked lor such a sum as would be necessary !o restore an efficient three-weekly i terviee. The board agreed to co-operate with ! !he Bluff Board. j I'lnvari Wharf Facilities. A letter was received from Mr fan j G. Davidson and seven other residents j </!' Port Levy (east) asking for the provision of a small shed (cargo shelter,! on Puwari wharf and for lighting laeilitles. The matter was referred to the engineer for a report on the cost of the work. Grants Made. A grant of 15 guineas was made to the Canterbury Sailing and Powerj boat Club towards the coi;t of the Sanders Cup content. ft. wr.d agreed to given £5 to the Lyttelton waterside workers' picnic fund for this year owing to special circumstances. In response to a request for a grant to the Lyttelton branch of the St. John Ambulance Association, it; was decided to give £2O to the headquarters of the association on condition that it took- charge of Lyttelton.
