A WAR PICTURE

GIFT TO NEW ZEALAND LORD WAKEFIELD'S GENEROSITY (mom oua ova co*bbspokd«mt.) LONDON, November 24. Lord Wakefield has presented to New Zealand an oil painting entitled Carillon. This is by the Australian artist, Mr Will Longstaff, whose Menin Gate is so well known. The original of the latter work was presented to Australia, and some 30,000 lithographs were printed, so the style of work is fairly well known—the army of phantom soldiers marching past the gate. The Carillon is on similar lines. In this case there is a beach on the left, a bright light penetrates through a break in the dark clouds. On the right is a hillside lightly covered with scrub and stunted trees, and down this hillside a phantom army is moving. The canvas is five feet high and nine l'eet long. Lord Wakefield wished to hand the picture over to Sir Thomas Wilford, but the latter has suggested that it should be the privilege of ihe new High Commissioner, Sir James Parr, to accept the gift on behalf of the Dominion, at some ceremony. Ten thousand lithograph reproductions are to be made of the painting and sold at a guinea each. The proceeds will be for the benesoldiers' organisations, distribution to be arranged by «ie Prune Minister of New Zealand.
