NORTH CANTERBURY

WAIPARA The Glenmark Tennis Club held a dance in the local hall on Boxing Night. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers and . greenery. Music was supplied by Mrs Ferguson, extras being played by Misses E. Hall, J. Ferguson, M. Whyte, J. Kilby. Mrs MacLachlan, Messrs Hall and E. Whyte. The waltzing competition was won by Mr and Mrs Hall, with Mr S. Shutt and Miss Mowat second. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Miss D. Blythe and partner, and of the lucky-spot, Miss K. Hall and Mr Grieves. Messrs H. Foster and M. Hare were masters of ceremonies. A flannel dance in aid of the school funds was held recently. Music was supplied by Mcsdames Trail. MacLachlan, Misses J. Ferguson. E. Hall, M. Palmer. M. Whyte. Mr 11. Foster was master of ceremonies. HORORATA At a .special children's service conducted by the vicar (the Rev. L. N. Watkins) in St. John's Anglican Church, the Sunday school children were presented with their annual prizes by Mr Watkins, in the absence of Mr Godfrey Hall. The following was the prize-list:— Miss M. Maffey's Class: Joyce McKenzie and Gwen Gibson. Class II.: Noeline Gray, Noeline Foster, Daphne McKcnzie, Arthur Chapman, Allan Foster, and Jim Williams. Class 111. (Miss H. On Christmas Day special services were conducted by the Rev. L. N. Watkins in the Hororata Anglican Church, which was prettily decorated for the festive season. A watch night service will be held at 11.30 p.m. on December 31. The Rev. L. N. Watkins, with Eric Maffey of the Hororata Bible Class, are attending the Bible class carnp at Methven. Mr and Mrs Kellaway, Mr and Mrs M. Kellaway, and Mr and Mrs B. Foster and family arc spending the holidays at Goose Bay, Kaikoura. Misses Cockroft (3) (Christchurch) are spending the holidays at Manor House, Hororata. Mr and Mrs Manning (Amberley) spent Christmas with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs Duckmanton. Miss Manning and Mr Obery (Amberley) were guests of Mr and Mrs Duckmanton for Christmas. Mr and Mrs Bateman spent the holidays at Geraldine. Mr and Mrs Walker (Christchurch) were the guests of Mr and Mrs G. Pearce for Christmas. Mr and Mrs W. O. Gray and family are visiting Timaru. Mr B. McKenzie (Christchurch) spent Christmas with his parents at Hororata. . . . Miss Joan Luxton (Riccarton) )s a guest at Manor House, Hororata. Miss Simm (West Melton.) is visiting friends in Hororata. Mr J. Creighton (Culverden), who has been visiting friends at Hororata for Christmas, has returned home. Mrs R. Murray has taken a house at Sumner for the holidays. Mr and Mrs Smith and Miss Smith (Christchurch) are guests of Mr and Mrs D. Busch. Harvesting operations have commenced in the district, there being paddocks of oats in stook. LITTLE RIVER The programme for to-morrow will be the splendid drama "Huddle," with Ramon Novarro and MadgH Evans, chapter two of "Detective Lloyd," and a Micky Mouse cartoon, "Micky Cuts Up." By request, Micky's "Musical Farmer" will be repeated. There wiJI be a "back to childhood" carnival dance on New Year's night. GLENROY Misses llance and G. Urc were guests of honour at an afternoon given by Mrs E. A. Dennis at her residence. Vocal items were given by Mesdamcs W. Hoseveui'o andC. Magan, Miss V. Jewell and Master McGuin, recitations by Mrs R. Marsh, while musical items were rendered by Mrs E. A. Dennis, Misses Jewell, and Master W. McGuin. Afternoon tea was served by the hostess, after which Mrs S. Roscveare presented Miss Rancc with a picture with the best wishes of the members of the Church Guild. The Misses A. and G. Ure were also the recipients of a necklace each. Miss Rancc was presented with a clock by the children of the Glcnroy school at. the annual prize-giving ceremony as a token of appreciation of her work during the last two years with the school children.
