SHORTER NOTICES
Gay Life. By E. M. Delafield. Macmillan. Miss Delafield draws a brilliantly satirical picture of a group of characters thrown together for a few days in a Riviera hotel. One likes, and is meant to like, scarcely a soul, laughs, but in the end is apt to shiver. Unborn To-morrow. By John Kendall. W. Collins Sons and Co. Ltd. Mr Kendall writes well, thinks searchingly, and has constructive imagination. As a vision of the world as it will be this novel has uncommon speculative interest. The Farm. By Louis Bromfield. Casscll. Through Whitcombe and Tombs Ltd. Mr Bromfield's account of one American scene throughout the slow changes of more than a century is not light reading, but it is absorbing. The Quiet Man. By Maurice Walsh. Angus and Robertson Ltd. 52 pp. (2/6.) Mr Walsh tells a very good story, in which action, romantic charm, and humour are well blended. Nelson's Medical Dictionary. By D. Elliot Dickson, M.D., F.K.C.S. 301 pp. (2/6 net.) A very satisfactory description of medical terms and home treatments, meant for the ordinary household. Modern Contract Bridge. By Frank Cayley. N.S.W. Bookstall Co. Ltd. 108 pp. Mr Cayley is the best-known Australian teacher of Contract.
