SPEED BOAT RACING

Commencing at 4.30 to-mori'ow afternoon, races will be held on the Estuary at Redcliffs by the Canterbury Outboard Motor-Boat Club. As it is high tide at Redcliffs at 10 p.m. on Saturday, the course will not be safe for racing until after 4.30 in the afternoon. The pilbts really prefer racing at this time of the day, as they stand a much better chance of getting smooth water,- which is so essential for good racing. The races set down for Saturday are the Mount Pleasant Handicap and the Heathcote Arms Cup, which has been given by Mr McGregor, of the Heathcote Arms Hotel. Both the events will consist of two heats and a final, the first and second boats only of each heat, competing in the final. The new system of handicapping used by the club this season, is certainly making the pilots much keener for they seem to be getting far higher speeds from their outfits. The handicapping sheets show chat the majority of boats have put up faster times. Under the new system, the race is broken up into heats, and a final, and as the first past the post is the winner, the racing is much more popular with the public. Saturday's events will be the last races this year, but the club will continue its programme soon after the holidays. The committee is very pleased with the support that it is getting from the public this season. Three new members joined the club last Saturday, making a total of 12 since the opening day. The club has also been presented with a handsome cup by Mr B. O. Priddis. This cup, which is of solid silver, will be known as the Priddis Cup, and will be competed for early in the New Year. NEW BRIGHTON CLUB The New Brighton Power-Boat Club will hold a motor-launch race at Lyttelton" on Saturday, over the usual course, from the moles twice round houseboat at Diamond Harbour, beginning at 2.45 p.m. Handicaps are as follows:—Mavis Stella (45min), Patari U2min 30sec), Cavalier (12min), Seamew (llmin 30see), Lorelie (Bmin), Foam (smin 30sec), Pacific (smin), Roamer (scr), Alacrity (scr).
