CANTERBURY MARKETS

i . I j (BT' OUR COIIiIEKCIAIi EDXTOE.i j Tuesday Evening. There is little life in the grain and ! produce market. All classes of small seeds are firm, particularly ryegrass and cocksfoot. Unless the export market for the former revives there is -little likelihood of much movement for some time to come, as there aie/ no local seasonal needs at the moment. The few farmers holding ryegrass from last season are not anxious to sell. Prospects are for a much reduced weight of seed next year, with opening prices on a much better level than last year. Quotations for ryegrass remain at 2s 6d to 2s 9d a bushel, and for cocksfoot 6Jd for Akaroa and'Ood for Plains, both on trucks. The oats market is unaltered, and except for small lines of seed there is little demand. Quotations. The following are quotations for produce to be paid to farmers, on trucks, free of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise stated: Wheat (interim payment)— Tuscan 3s 9d, Hunters 3s lid, Pearl 4s Id, all f.0.b.; fowl feed, to 3s 9d a bushel, f.0.b., s.e., for prompt. Flour—£l3 12s a ton, local; £l2 17s shipping. Bran—Large, local £4 10s, shipping £4 10s a ton; small, local £5. Pollard—Large local. £5 10s. ship- . ping £4 10s; small local £(S. AUCKLAND 1 THE PRESS Special Service. I AUCKLAND, November 21. New potatoes are coming to hand ; very freely from Pukekohe, as well : as from other pacts of the district, and j values have again cased. Merchants j are quoting 3s Gd a sugar-bag, ex store, a low figure for the month of November. The new crop is being marketed in excellent condition. The most notable alteration in values since the last report concerns Canadian onions, which rose sharply from 14s Gd to 22s 6d a cental bag. There has been no change in the quotations for oats or chaff. B Gartons are steady at 3s a bushel, and chaff at £6 10s a ton There arc still plentiful supplies oi maize coming forward from the Bay of Plenty, and these sell readily at about 4s to 4s 2d a bushel. Pollard and bran are unchanged. Plentiful supplies of Australian pollard arc still available and arc in good demand. PRICE OF GOLD LONDON. November 20. Gold, a line ounce, is quoted: £ s. U. November 21. ; The Federal Cabinet has decided I to introduce legislation to enable the j dairying industry to reorganise the i marketing of butter in Australia and give dairymen the benefit of an Australian price for local consumption. This legislation will replace the Paterson scheme, and will also ensure that butter for export will be exported overseas and not to other states.

AUSTRALIAN WHISKY INDUSTRY j The chairman of Grinds, Ltd., Australia, Mr C. L. Brind, stated at the annual meeting that a new whisky would be on the market before the company's next annual meeting. The whisky was maturing splendidly after | five years. Discussing a report that oversea distillers were endeavouring to obtain control of the business by buying shares, Mr Brind said that since the amalgamation the Distillers Company. Ltd.. of Edinburgh, had held the majority of shares of the United Distillers, and therefore had the control of the company. THE CITY MARKET j Mr 11. 0.
