SHIPPING IN TASMAN
COMPETITION FROM AMERICA DOMINIONS' NEGOTIATIONS PRAISED LONDON COMMENT ON SUBSIDIES (iTfITED PRESS ASSOCIATION"—UT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) (Received October 17, 9.2 p.m.) LONDON, October 17. The city editor of "The Times," welcoming the Australian and NewZealand negotiations regarding shipping competition, expresses the opinion that the particular issue at present being discussed is the American trans-Pacific service, which is among the examples of extremely unfair practices from which British shipping suffers. America bars Great Britain from trading between San Francisco and Honolulu, while the British are forced to meet the competition of subsidised Americans trading between Australia and New Zealand. This is a particularly glaring example of the effects of the American Government's favouritism and financial assistance. It is hoped that Australia and New Zealand will secure a greater element of reason on the transPacific routes.
