Mr H. Lan Simson, of Hastings who has announced himself as a candidate in the Liberal Labour interests in the Buller by-election, arrived from the north yesterday morning and left later for the West Coast. Mr M. J. Gresson, who went to England in April to take cases before the Privy Council on behalf of the Taranaki Electric Power Board and the estate of the late Ranald Macdonald, returned to Christchurch yesterday. Mr B. V. Wright, winner of the amateur title at the New Zealand golf championships, arrived from Wellington by the Wahine yesterday morning. Dr. K. Ross, of Dunedin, who also participated in the championship meeting, returned from the north yesterday. Mr E. J. G. Stringer, Senior Inspector of Scaffolding for New Zealand, will retire on superannuation on October 21. Mr Stringer commenced duty with the Labour Department at Christchurch in January, 1907, and has remained in Christchurch ever since, although he was elevated to the position of senior inspector in 1922.

Keference was made at the meeting of the Christchurch Drainage Board last night by the chairman (Mr J. W. Beanland) to the death of Mr H. E. Holland, leader of the Opposition in the New Zealand Parliament, and on the chairman's motion, members standing, it was decided to express the sympathy of the board with the relatives.

Dr. Herbert Money, who left Christchurch in 1927 to take a position on the teaching staff of the Anglo-Peruvian College at Lima, is at present revisiting his parents, Mr and Mrs E. A. Money, Mersey street, St. Albans. On this, his first long furlough since going to Peru, Dr. Money, who is accompanied t>T-"vy his wife, has visited England, Scot-' ] land, and Australia. He will return to Peru at the end of the year.

The Rev. F. T. Read and Messrs T. L. Drummond and E. F. Willcox, officials of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association, left last evening for Wellington, where they will interview the National War Funds Council and the Canteen Funds Board in an endeavour to obtain a grant for the completion of the village homes settlement at Sandilands. At the same time they will place before the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. J. A. Young) the case for the allotment of a share in the proceeds of an art union to the settlement scheme.

Pickering, who is now in the fifth year of his ministry in the Pahiatua circuit, has received and accepted a unanimous

invitation (subject to confirmation by the conference) to the Cambridge Terrace Church (Christchurch); but he will not be leaving till next April. The "Manawatu Standard" states that the contemplated departure of Mr and Mrs Pickering from the Pahiatua district is viewed by church officials and congregation with sincere regret, as by their consistent zeal and self-sacrifice they have given splendid service in all parts of the circuit.. Mr Pickering will succeed the Rev. T. W. Vealie at the Cambridge Terrace Church. On Saturday last Mr H. J. Otley completed 31 years as a member of the Christchurch Drainage Board, and reference was made to the fact at the meeting of the board last night by the chairman, Mr J. W. Beanland. He said that 31 years was a fairly long period for one to_be on a local body. He had found Mr Otley a man with whom one could work. He had acted as chairman ol the board when Mr Walter Hill had been absent from the city on business, and also had been chairman for a period. Under Mr Otley s chairmanship members had received the greatest courtesy, and as a member of the board Mr Otley's services had been invaluable. They all hopea that Mr Otley would remain a member of the board for a good many years. Mr Otley, in thanking members for their good wishes, said thai he was proud of the work done oy the board.
