'A NEW CLUB BUILDING

PREMISES IN OXFORD TERRACE ! I WORK TO START SHORTLY The erection of a new three-storey building, to serve as club premises, will be started in Oxford terrace on November 1. The new building, which will stand on a vacant section between the Christchurch Gas Company's premises and the building occupied by Maling and Company, will cost £ 8200, and the overall cost of the establishment of the premises is expected to be about £ 15,000. The contract for the new building, which will be a notable addition to modern architecture in the city, has j been let to Mr T. E. Marriott, building contractor, of Christchurch, who is already engaged in several building ventures in the city. The building will be a partly basmented structure, with a frontage of 75 feet on to Oxford terrace, and will be of brick and concrete construction, timbered internally. On the north side the building will have a depth of 52 feet and on the south side of 85 feet. Messrs Collins and West are the architects.

Modern Design. The external design of the club is modern and simple. The external walls will be given a cement finish, and the front elevation will be in colours. The main entrance will be a wide porch giving access on to Oxford terrace. On the ground floor will be the members' lounge, the visitors' room, the members' bar. administration offices, and other accommodation. The dining-room, the sitting-room, the reading-room, kitchen and offices will be on the first floor, and the billiards room', card-room, and staff accommodation on the second floor. In the basement will be the wine cellar and heating plant. Part of the internal finishing will be panelled, while the ceilings will be of stamped steel placed over sound-deadening material. Bay windows will be a feature of the p-o'it facade, ard all windows have been ! designed to give a maximum of ! light. The contract is expected to take nine months, and will give employment not only to many permanent tradesmen but to unemployed as well. At times, taking the subsidiary contracts into account, the job will employ at least 30 men, according to Mr Marriott, who stated yesterday that some of those men would certainly come from the ranks of the unemployed.
