THE SHOW SEASON

ELLESMERE TO-MORROW The 1933 spring show season commences to-morrow, when the oldestablished Ellesmere' show will be hold at Leeston. The association was formed in 1871, so that it is one of the eldest institutions of its kind in the Dominion. The show is regarded by breeders as a good testing ground for the metropolitan exhibition, as stock that scores at Ellesmere is assured of success at Christchurch. The sheep classes comprise 225 entries, competition being strong in Southdowns and English Leicesters. Shorthorn cattle will make an improved display, there being well-filled classes in the juvenile division. Friesians, Milking Shorthorns, and Jerseys will also be well represented. The Clydesdale section is always one of the features of the show, as the agricultural character of the farming carried on, in the country is reflected in numerous teams of high-class draughts. One of the best competitions will be in the filly classes, as there will be strong rings in all the juvenile contests. The light-horse section is also well filled, particularly in the harness division.

HEADER HARVESTING MORE MACHINES IN PROSPECT It is understood that there has been a decided increase in the demand foxheader harvester machines for next harvest. These machines, after a long period of very searching trial, have steadily overcome the doubts held as to their utility for Canterbury farming. It Is now agreed that under a wide range of Canterbury soils the harvester is an economical machine, and, as prices for wheat make it imperative that production costs should be reduced to a minimum, the binder will probably be replaced on a number of farms next harvest by the header.
