CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS The Canterbury Rugby Union rnet last evening. Present: Mr A. E. McPhail (in the chair), Dr. W. S. Seed, Messrs E. V. M. Phillips, A. I. Cottrell, H. E. Davis, A. E. Duggan, W. Maxwell, A. Thompson, S. V. Jensen, J. K. Moloney, M. Leadbetter, and R. R. Masters. Letters of congratulation for the successful defence of the Ranfurly shield were received from the Otago Rugby Union, the Canterbury Cricket Association, the Canterbury Hockey Association, the Canterbury Football Association, and the Buller Rugby Union.

Reporting for the competitions committee, Mr Phillips said that it was desired to recommend for the consideration of the clubs at their next annual meetings a remit that the under 18 and un ler 17 grades be deleted, and in their place he substituted sixth and seventh grades (open), followed by an under 16 (open) and an under 16 (weight limit). It was also decided to hola two preliminary rounds in the lower grades, the teams to be rigidly classified according to their capabilities. The committee decided that the matter be held over until February, the recommendations to be circulated among the members meanwhile. The High School Old Boys' Club wrote enclosing £1 Is as a donation towards the Young Men's Christian Association sports queen fund. A deputation from the Young Men's Christian Association waited on the committee with a request that a subscription be made to the association's funds. The matter was referred to the finance committee, the committee's recommendation to be considered at the next meeting. Mr Davis reported that the Canterbury representative team's visit to the West Coast had been successful from every viewpoint, the game being a good one, and the final result a fair indication of the merits of the teams on the day. The West Coast officials were very grateful to the Canterbury Union for the way it was helping the West Coast Union. One suggestion that had been made was that home-and-home matches be played annually between the Coast and Canterbury, a date mentioned for the fixtures being June 3. Unfortunately, a number of injuries had been received by the Canterbury players, C. J. Oliver having a blood vessel in a leg broken, as a consequence of which he was still confined to bed. T. F. Mullan had received a poisoned arm, the infection now having to a leg. It was decided to write to the West Coast Union thanking it for hospitality to the team.

ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The management committee of the Canterbury Football Association was held last evening. Present: Messrs J. E. Jones (chairman), F. Wade, J. MacFarlane, G. R. Towart, H. Smyth, H. Weatherhead, J. A. Robb, and R. B. Bunt (honorary secretary). Minutes of a recent meeting of the New Zealand council were received. These contained the information that General W. R. N. Maddocks, the New Zealand representative on the Football Association (London), had written stating that it was unlikely that an English team would visit New Zealand in the near future, because a tour would take up too much time. A copy of this letter had been forwarded to the Australian Association. It was decided to leave the presentation of the fifth and sixth grade trophies to the discretion of the chairman and secretary.

The Sixth Grade Winners. • The Celtic Association Football Club wrote that though the Technical Club had claimed the sixth grade shield, Celtic was of die opinion that Technical, because it had failed to comply 1 with the decision of the Boys' Division, had less claim to the shield than ; Celtic. I The Technical Club, on the other hand, wrote that reference to the Boys' Division register showed definitely that Technical was one point in the lead of Celtic, and that both teams had to play Sumner to complete the round. Owing to the lateness of the season and the impossibility of playing off these matches, application was made to have Technical declared the winner of this competition. After some discussion this question was referred to the match committee. It was resolved to empower the finance, committee to decide any urgent business that might crop up during the closed season. It was decided to suspend all unfinancial clubs.
