—9_ | WOMEN'S TOURNEY I CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINALS REACHED (I'HESS ASSOCIATION' TZLEQIUa.) WANGANUI, October 17. With a wind of almost gale.force encountered at the more exposed holes on the Belmont course to-day, conditions were not as favourable for the continuation of the New Zealand ladies' golf championship tournament as was the ease on the earlier davs. Scores which managed to remain near the eighties earlier in the tournament soared up to the late nineties, and in some instances reached three figures. Even leading players, most of whom dia not go out till later in the afternoon, and thus encountered the full force of the wind, found themselves returning expensive cards in the Donnelly Cup match.

The local champion, Miss Currie won her game against Mrs Guy Williams by confident play. Mrs Williams nnding the wind very troublesome Miss Gaisford and Mrs Collinson had a close game, which was won by the former at the seventeenth, after being two up at the turn

Another close game was fought out between Mrs Stout and Mrs Blain tho former winning 2 up and 1, faulty putting over the last two holes spoiling the chance of the loser. The match between Miss Kay and Miss Barns-Graham was very exciting, and the Australian champion was taken to the nineteenth before she gained a win, being three up at the turn. A feature of the game was the powerful driving and fine putthv of the winner. ° Scores were:— Mrs Stout beat Mrs Blain, 2 up rnd Miss Kay beat Miss Barns-Graham at the nineteenth. 2 up S and a i Sf ° rd bCat Mrs Collinso »- 4 up" mS"? bCat MrS G - Williams .

The Donnelly Cup. After the fourth round players in the championship came the Donnelly Cup contestants, playing over 18 holes of stroke play, this match also counting as the third of the series for the Mellsop Cup aggregate. Miss E. 'Fleetwood iChnslchurch) was the winner returning a net score of 76, her carl of 93 being reduced by a handicap of 17. returning a card of 05 for the Donnelly Cup, Miss O. Kay thus had an aggregate of 242 for the Mellsop Cup, her coronation medai round being done in 78, and her Ladies' Golf Union challenge match figures were 79. This makes her eighth win in succession for Miss Kay in the Mellson Cup, a record without parallel in the two decades over which the trophy has been contested. Mrs G. Williams, it may be noted, won the Mellsop Cup on no fewer than seven occasions at intervals, but Miss Kay's victories have been registered in successive years. As was befitting a player who had broken the course record in the coronation d fL round ' Mrs Cook (Castlecliff; rilled the role of runner-up, but her card_ was an expensive one of 9Q, making ner aggregate 250. eight strokes behind Miss Kay's. Two strokes further back came Miss Gaisford, with another semi-finalist in Mrs Stout tielng with Miss Barns-Graham with 255. _ The club teams' match played to-day in, conjunction with the Donnelly Cup was won by Manawatu A team, with a total of 360 strokes. Wellington A ■team's score was 364y with Hawka's Bay next with 368. The leading teams were: Manawatu A fMiss Gaisford 85. Mrs Cook 90. Miss Helean 92, Miss Currie 93): total, 380.
