The latter, who is in the maiden event, is a three-year-old gelding by Tea Tray from Endorse, by Paper Money frcm Epitaph, ; and on/y had one start last season, winning a maiden event at Greymouth by a margin. Ho i • Ties the colours previously associated with jJoortcr, and is endowed with the .'"mi"j' """ r ' "'red. Over the ZTaitens. Advance Camp gave an excellent display over four hurdles. Before coming south some months back, he had the reputation of being a failure in schooling, but there has been no fault to find with any of his recent tasks at Riccarton. He is to go to Trentham to contest the hurdle races on the second and third days. Staying: at Home. Royal Amphora was accepted for on the first day's programme at Trentham, and his prospects of success were highly regarded, but owing to his owner finding it impracticable to make the trip himself, the gelding's engagements have been cancelled. He will probably make his next appeai-ance at the Banks Peninsula fixture. Stud Items. Weeplete, dam of Royal Amphora, has produced a filly to Nightmarch, and Arrowlet, a sister to Minerval, a colt to the same sirei La Paix, who is on a visit to Nightmarch, has foaled a filly to Paper Money. Finished Racing. Tautbow has failed to stand up to training, and his owner, Mr F. Williamson, has given him away for use as a hack. StM Going. Fast Passage was included in those worked on the plough yesterday, her exercise being confined to trotting and cantering. She carries plenty of condition, and hopes are once more entertained that she will be able to race again before being retired to the stud. She has been nominated for the Auckland Cup.

Track Work at Riccarton. Climatic and track conditions were Ideal for training operations at Riccarton .yesterday. The outside of the trial grass was open for fast work, and following the rain over the weekend the going was in excellent order. The plough was also in use, but for useful exercise only. Chokebor; Representatives. . Rocket and Heather Glow galloped a mile in lmin 45sec, the last half in 53 3-ssec. The former should race well at Trentham, while Heather Glow would appear to have good prospects at Rangiora. Cricket Bat, Silent Flight, and Copyist were restricted to strong work, with short sprints home. Net Extended. Guarantee and Nightly were together throughout a seven-furlong task taking lmin 31 l-ssec, the last half in 51 3-ssec. Both were going very easily at the finish. A Likely Favourite. Doiran and High Tor were let off with a working gallop over seven furlongs occupying lmin 35 2-ssec. The former will race at Trentham and High Tor will be at Rangiora. Coining On. Monastic, accompanied by Argentic for five furlongs, ran six furlongs attractively in lmin 17 2-ssec, the last half in 50 2-ssec. Argentic has done very well lately, and it is hoped to reproduce him at the Banks Peninsula meeting next week. A Classic Prospect. Bright Red and Custodian covered half a mile home in 49 l-ssec, finishing together. The latter will be ridden in the Wellesley Stakes to-morrow by M. Kirwan. Glandovey and Proscenium sprinted three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Both should earn distinction at Rangiora. Metal Bird attracted attention by galloping seven furlongs in lmin 29 S-ssec, the last half in 52 3-ssec. Hobin Hood acted as companion, but was not of much use in the run home. Trip Cancelled. Fiat Lux and St. Joan strode over seven furlongs in lmin 32 2-ssec, the last hah in 52 2-ssec. The latter has been suffering from lameness of late, and as she did not pull up very satisfactorily it was decided not to take her to Trentham. Useful Work.' Sweet Agnes impressed by covering a mile in lmin 42 3-ssec, the last half in 51 3-ssec. Errantry accompanied her over the last five furlongs, which occupied lmin 4 2-ssec. Tout le Monde was allotted threequarter pace on one of the inside tracks. Grand Review and Motunau comfortably traversed seven furlongs in lmin 33sec, the former finishing under a strong hold. Ramo and Night Flyer were not seriously ridden at any par' of a nine-,i furlong task, faking 2min 13 2-ssec. I Fast Sprint. Great Star and Double Shot reeled off half a mile along the back in 48 3-ssec. This stretch of ground is much faster than the half-mile home, but nevertheless the time was exceptionally good on a holding track. Strong Light and Silver Briar ran seven furlongs in lmin 33sec. Minerval, assisted by Elude over the last six furlongs, covered a mile in lmin 43 2-ssec, taking 50 l-ssec for the first half. Juveniles at Masterton. Tutor, winner of the Nursery Handicap at the Masterton meeting on Saturday, is a bay colt by Chief Ruler from Graciosa, dam of Intruder and Granado. He is owned by his breeder Mr V. Riddiford, and is engaged in the Wellesley Stakes. Bazaine, second to Tutor, is by Arausio from the Boniform mare Conchita, and is owned by his breeder, Mr F. Ormond. He is to contest the Taita Handicap to-morrow. Morbury, who ran third to this pair, is owned by Mr W. R. Kemball, and is a chestnut filly by Chief Ruler from Pebble 11., an English mare by Rock Flint. She is in the Stakes to-morrow.

A Small Return. Mr Riddiford also won the following event at Masterton with Zetes, brother to Agrion and Waikare. Zetes took charge commencing the run home, and although he had to be kept going right up to the post to ward off Umpire his win was impressive. Umpire is a five-year-old gelding by Winning Hit from Rivalry. He has had very little experience, and no racing for two years. He just failed to catch Zetes. and will have a larger following in his next engagement. WINOOKA IN AMERICA NO RACE WITH EQLIPOISIi (TJHITED I'Rr.SS ASSOCIATION— UY ELECT KIC Tzi.EOßArn—copvßioirr.) (Received October 17, 5.5 p.m.) BALTIMORE. October 16'. As Mr C. Whitney required a definite answer by October 16 regarding the proposed race between Equipose and Winooka at Belmont Park on November 7, the distance to be one mile, the weight 8-8, Mr R. Naylor has replied stating that the conditions are unacceptable. He said Winooka would defeat his opponents on October 20. and then would claim the American sprint championship. Mr Naylor, as a final concession, said he would agree to 9-0, but definitely would not consent to the extension of the distance beyond seven furlongs. He adds: "Let the sportingworld judge between us." Winooka's race on Friday is attracting interest. His likely opponents are Jamestown, Character, and Goldstep, with Jamestown the probable favourite.

Collins, a well-known owner, is willing to match Strathcarron against Winooka over five furlongs for £IOOO a side, with a side bet of £SOO, provided the race is run at Hurst Park. London "Sporting Life" expresses the opinion that other owners will be glad to provide matches with Winooka in England next season. [Strathcarron is a four-year-old grey gelding by Tetratema from Rathcarron.]
