WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

KAIKOUHA I The first of a series ol' lour card 'evenings inaugurated by the members of the Kaikoura Women's Institute took place at the Oddfellows' Hall. There was a large attendance. The funds are to be devoted to cases of local distress. The winners were Mrs N. Comer and Mr H. Miller. The president (Mrs A. B. Clark) thanked those present for their attendance. Supper was served. KAIAPOI A very successful meeting was held in the borough hall to form a women's institute in Kaiapoi. The Mayoress, Mrs Vickery, was in the chair. More than 60 women were present and 58 of these became members at the first meeting. Mrs William Deans, president ol the North Canterbury and Westland Federation of Women's Institutes, gave an address on the aims and objects of the movement, as also did Mrs J. W. McLeod, Loburn, group organiser. Hearty voles of thanks were passed to both women. Afternoon tea was served. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs L. C. B. Fuldseth; vicepresident, Mrs W. H. Vickery; honorary secretary, Mrs E. J. Corcoran; honorary treasurer, Mrs A. E. Brown; committee, Mesdames R. J. Smith, R. Gill, S. Baker, A. Blakeley, Graeme Aitken, W. Richards. .1. D. McMullah, Bruce Forest, and Miss C. Reid. It was decided to hold meetings on the second Tnursday of each month.

HORNBY The monthly meeting of the Hornby Women's Institute was held at the Parish Hall, Mrs C. Rugg presiding over a large attendance of members. Miss Mary McKenzie was welcomed as a new member. Mrs W. Richardson acted as secretary in the absence of Mrs Scott on account of illness. It was decided that Mrs Robinson should be correspondent for the home and country journal. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr J. Pearce in the death of his wife. For the coming six months Mesdames A. Stevenson and Jellie will take charge of the competition and saies tables respectively. Competitions played during the afternoon were won by Mesdames J. Rowe, H. Day, and J. Palmer. The home competition was won by Mrs J. Rowe i.Tempieton) 1, Mrs Hepburn 2. Mrs A. Stevenson presented a knitted doll for the institute funds. Songs were sung by Mrs Robinson, and Mrs Schofield played a pianoforte solo. The hostesses for the afternoon wqre Mrs J. Drake, Misses Wynne Burt and Rene Baker.
