POLITICAL NOTES

[From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON. October 16. Government Bills. Government bills will be dealt with by the House of Representatives when it resumes to-morrow, and before the House rises in the evening several of these should have been passed and sent on their wwar5 r to the Legislative Council, which has been marking time ever since the session opened. Measures which will be committed to-morrow are the Nurses and Midwives Registration Amendment Bill, the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum Amendment Bill, the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Amendment Bill, the Arbitration Clauses (Protocol) and Arbitration (Foreign Awards) Bill, the Marriage Amendment Bill, and Judicature Amendment Bill. Control of Showmen. The only one of these which is likely to give any trouble is the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Amendment Bill, which seeks to widen powers of agricultural and pastoral societies in dealing with undesirable showmen. During the second reading debate, members expressed some concern about the measure, maintaining that the powers which it proposed to give went too far; and it is possible that an endeavour will be made to modify some of the provisions during the committee stages. The Companies Bill, a monumental measure of a very intricate nature, is expected to make its appearance to-morrow, and is keenly awaited. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand Bill will probably follow on Wednesday or Thursday. Budget Next Week. The budget is not likely to be presented to the House by the Minister for Finance (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) until next week, as there are still one or two points awaiting determination.

Private Members' Bills. Private members' bills will receive their first airing this week, Wednesday and Thursday being devoted to their consideration. Those set down for second reading on Wednesday are the British Nationality and Status of Aliens (in New Zealand) Bill, Mr P. Fraser (Lab., Wellington Central); the Summer Time Amendment Bill, Mr R. McKeen (Lab., Wellington South); the Order-in-Council Confirmation Bill, Mr Clyde Carr (Lab., Timaru); and the Workers Compensation Amendment Bill (which was introduced by Mr H. E. Holland, but which will probably be taken over by another Labour member.
