CYCLING
"ROUND THE GORGES" RACE j TO-DAY'S BIG EVENT To-day, the Papanui Amateur Cycling Club will be conducting the sixth annual road race "Round the Gorges," of 100 miles. This year's event carries with it the 100 miles New Zealand championship. The limit riders will be dispatched from the Papanui Hotel at 9.4£ a.m., and the scratch men at 10.40 a.m. A strong team is on the scratch mark, including Frank Grose, who has gained fastest time on four previous occasions, and who holds the record for the course of 4hr 30min 25 2-ssec. E. W. Stevens, the 50 miles Canterbury champion, N. Berry, winner of the race in 1929, J. L. Richards, a former New Zealand champfen, and R. W. Richards, will be Grose's co-markers, and providing weather conditions are favourable there is every probability of the record being lowered. The junior championship is expected to be a duel between R. B. Blakeway (lOmin) and W. C. Grigor (13min). G. R. Hann <2omin) and A. T. BradIbury (28min) are favourites for the 1 race, but they will have strong opposition in A. J. Lancaster (lOmin), T. A. Grose, and K. Karaitiana (13min), J. E. Seward, and L. Fever (28min), and J. S. Pulley (40min). The first rider is expected to arrive at the Show Grounds, Addington, about 3 p.m. To entertain patrons who are waiting for the finish, a varied programme has been arranged, including running events by members of the Canterbury Athletic Club, a fancy dress cycle parade, and a kite flying competition.
