ERADICATING RAGWORT
POWERS GIVEN TO COUNTY COUNCILS (PEESS ASSOCIATION TJSLEGEASt.) WELLINGTON, October 4. The Minister for Agriculture (thi Hon. C. E. Macmillan) stated to-day that he had Cabinet authority to prepare legislation enabling assistance to be given through comity councils to fanners for the eradication of ragwort. Councils which have already bought sodium chlorate for sale to farmers, in addition to use on public property, will have their action validated. In addition, they will be given specific power to purchase sodium chlorate in bulk for resale if necessary at less than cost price. They will also be empowered to raise a loan for the purpose without recourse to a poll o* ratepayers, the loan to be repaid within five years out of the general funds.
