BRITISH TRADE WITH INDIA

STRIKING INCREASES IN IMPORTS JAPANESE COMPETITION FELT LONDON, September 13. The report of the Board of Trade's Commissioner in India for the three months from April to June, 1933, provides a striking illustration of the effect of the Ottawa agreement on India's import trade. 1 In nearly every item in which there is preference to the United Kingdom there is an improved percentage of trade. In most cases the shipments have actually increased, although the* total shipments are reduced. United Kingdom products are gradually displacing Continental and American goods, but Japanese competition is increasingly severe in a steadily widening range of articles. The disparity between United Kingdom and Japanese prices is usually so wide that the 10 per cent, preference is entirely inadequate.
