RELIEF FROM BURDEN OF RATES SOUGHT
THAMES RESIDENTS MEET COMMISSIONER (FSK33 ASSOCIATION TZLEGRAIt.) THAMES, September 8. Immediate and substantial relief from the burden of rates was sought by a representative deputation of borough ratepayers which met the commissioner (Mr C. L. Grange) at the borough chambers last evening. The financial problems of Thames were fully discussed, and the opinion was expressed that the position had become infinitely worse in the last two years. In view of recent court actions, the deputation asked for a definite statement of the commission's policy in the recovery of rates. The commissioner stated that summonses were issued in accordance with the legal obligation of any local body, but emphatically denied that any undue pressure was intended in. cases of hardship. He challenged anyone to bring one single case where pressure was "being unfairly applied, or where a ratepayer was not getting a fair deal. Mr Grange promised to give the representations of the deputation full consideration, and give a definite written reply to-day.
