TRIBUTES TO MR F. J. SHANKS
■+ ■ WORK FOR LILY CIRCLE Regret at the loss of Mr F. J. Shanks, Chief Postmaster at 'Christchurch, who has been promoted to the position of second assistant secretary to the Post and Telegraph Department, was expressed at a meeting of the Lily Circle of the Canterbury Horticulture Society last evening. Dr. T. Fletcher Telford said that the departure of Mr Shanks would mean a severe loss to the circle, and to the society. Mr Shanks had been one of the founders of the circle, and had always been keenly interested in lilies. Mr L. B. Hart, the new chairman of the management committee of the Canterbury Horticulture Society, and Messrs W. Balch and M. J. Barnctt also spoke of the work done by Mr Shanks for the circle, and for horticulture. Mrs W. Brown spoke on behalf of women members. In reply, Mr Shanks said that he deeply regretted the necessity that compelled him to leave the society. Mr Shanks was entertained at a farewell luncheon on Thursday by other heads of Government departments in Christchurch. Mr E. S. Brittenden, District Traffic Manage of Railways, presided, and expressed the appreciation of other departments of the help which had always been given by the Chief Postmaster. Other speakers expressed their regret at the departure of Mr Shanks.
