•♦ • LAST DAYS OF BUILDING SUBSIDY With the Unemployment Board's building subsidy scheme closing on Tuesday, next, the Labour Department at Christchurch has been receiving a steady stream of applications for assistance. The jobs have ranged in value from £l2 to £4s,ooo—the latter being the new Catholic Orphanage at Mount Magdala. The erection of the new Methodist Orphanage, estimated to cost £20,000, will be commenced shortly, and tenders for this work will probably be called to-day. The subsidy is on a basis of 50 per cent, of the wages cost for dwellings up to £650 in value, and 33 1-3 per cent, on other jobs. So far the department has received 650 applications for assistance, and the value of the work is £398,016, involving a wages cost of £136,209.
