BUSINESS MEN'S APPEAL The contributions to the Citizens' Relief of Distress Fund received yesterday brought the total to date up to £13,222 Is Cd. The honorary treasurer, Mr J. W. Begg and Co.. thirteenth contribution .. . . 0 10 10 Staff Fletcher, Humphreys and Company, third contribution .. 312 3 13,222 1 6 CASE OF DISTRESS A FAMILY HOMELESS The honorary director of the Metropolitan Relief Association makes the following appeal on behalf of a family which has recently suffered misfortune:— A very unfortunate and acute case of distress has just been brought beI fore my notice. The home occupied by Mr A. Trotter, a relief worker employed by the Waimakariri River Trust, was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday evening while he and his wife and two children, aged 11 and 12 years respectively, were attending a social function arranged by the Nomads Football Club. The whole of his furniture, floor coverings, beds, bedding, cooking utensils, and personal clothing (with the exception of what they were wearing at the time) were completely demolished, and were uninsured. A fellow relief worker, Mr Smythe, has kindly offered shelter for this distressed family pending their making other arrangements. The articles enumerated above are urgently required, and donations of furniture, etc., will be most gratefully appreciated. Mr Trotter has been prominent in football circles, being a former Provincial Association representative. Any offers of assistance may be telephoned to No. 36-025, and immediate arrangements will be made to pick up any articles. MEETING OF WOMEN'S COMMITTEE A meeting of the Women's Unemployment Committee was held last night, Mrs A. I. Fraer in the chair. The finance committee presented its report, which showed that the usual room rent and subsidies were being paid to various women and girls. The employment report indicated that 160 women and girls were given employment in the centres and 29 had been placed in private positions. The cooking and sewing sub-com-mittee's report showed that 2229 meah had been supplied to unemployed women and girls. The advisory committee reported that all applications for room reni had been considered and allocations arranged. One woman was struck ofl the list for refusing to accept a position offered. The rationing committee reported that it had selected suitable women and girls. The !New Brighton sub-committee presented a report which showec 46 on the "live" list, and that wage; paid for four months amounted tc £152 0s Cd.
PLIGHT Or UNEMPLOYED GIRLS CANADIAN THREAT VANCOUVER, September 7. Unemployed girls, declaring the city relief allowances were too small to permit them to purchase clothing, threatened through their representative to the Dominion Government, Mrs Flora Hutton, to hold a nude parade. The Government was told that thousands of girls were unable to leave their rooms because they had no clothing and many had been forced to seek a disgraceful livelihood on the streets. Sir George Perley, the (Acting-Premier, promised that the Cabinet would consider the matter.
