NORTH CANTERBURY

—♦ — RANGIORA The Rangiora Brass Band will give the last of the series of Sunday night concerts in the Town Hall to-morrow evening. A good programme will be presented. The annual dance of the Rangiora Golf Club was held in the parish hall on Thursday evening. Visitors were present from Amberley, Kaiapoi, Oxford, and Christchurch. The music for dancing was supplied by Bob Bradford's orchestra (Christchurch). The hall was decorated with cherry crepe paper. The arrangements were made by Mesdames L. M. King, T. G. Ellis, Misses N. Morris, Nan Macdonald, Joan Palairet, and Ambrose, and Messrs J. Johnston (hon. secretary), J. Palairet (hon. treasurer), and A. Macdonald. "Movie Crazy," Harold Lloyd's newest and funniest picture, will be screened at the Rangiora Town Hall this afternoon and to-night. The story is that of a small town boy who longed for screen glory and who got himself into many scrapes. KAIKOURA The Kaikoura Brass Band gave a concert in the drill hall on Thursday night. Mr W. F. Perrin, the conductor, thanked those present for the hearty manner in which the items had been received, and the assisting artists—Mrs C. Davies (Christchurch), Miss N. Burland, Miss A. E. Flower (accompanist), and Mr G. H. Bartlett. The band played the marches "Winsford." "Eagle-ray," "Merry and Bright," and "Ivanhoe"; the fantasia "Fidelity," and the selection "Echoes of the Empire." Messrs H. Austin and F. Taylor combined in a cornet duet, "What are the Wild Waves Saying?" the encore number being "Larboard Watch." Mr P. J. Smith gave a solo on the euphonium. The vocal numbers were "April is a Lady," "The Little Bachelor Bird," "Fisher Lad," and "Good Morning; Brother Sunshine" (Miss N. Butland). and "Life is a Caravan," "Down the Shallow River." "The Arrow and the Song," and "Laugh and Sing" (Mrs Claude Davies). Mr G. H. Bartlett contributed the elocutionary items "The Pig-tail of Li Fang Fu," "Confessions," "An Old Sweetheart of Mine," and "The Street Watchman's Story." Frosts have been experienced in Kaikoura during the last few days, followed by sunshine. Peach and apricot trees are in blossom, and there is an abundance of spring flowers. In reply to the county council's letter and deputation to the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. J. Bilchener), the Hon. E. A. Ransom (Minister for Lands) wrote as follows: "I have to state that after reviewing the reports furnished by my department, I have decided that the proposal to alienate this reserve either by way o* sale or exchange, must be held over for the present." WAIAU The annual meeting of the Amuri Flower Show Committee was held in the Library Hall. Waiau, when Mr G. Hartnell, president of- the Amuri Agricultural and Pastoral Association, presided. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet were adopted. A small debit balance was shown on the year's working, and this was made up from reserve funds. It was decided to hold the next annual show at Waiau on December 6. The officials of the Amuri Agricultural and Pastoral Association, under whose auspices the show is held, were elected for the ensuing year, and the committee was elected as follows:—Mesdames M. Bethell. G. O. Rutherford, T. C. Robinson, D. C, Macfarlane, S. Heard. G. Hartnell, H. Dampier-Crossley, R. A. Hoban. J. L. Macfarlane, P. R. Dearden, G. T. White, E. B. Moore, F. R. Smale. Miss Anderson, Messrs C. Higtfins. G. T. White. A. H. Baker, R. Smith, Dr. F. R. Smale, the Rev. E. B. Moore, and the Rev. K. Larsen. Mr H. T. Knight was re-elected secretary at an honorarium of £5. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded him for past services, and for his donation from last year's honorarium. A committee of women was set up to take charge of the afternoon tea on show day. The schedule was then revised and alterations were decided on. The annual meeting of the Ladies' Croquet Club was held in the Library Hall. Mrs F. C. Forbes presided. The report and balance-sheet, which were adopted, showed the club to be in a sound financial position. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—Patron, Mrs P. Morse; president, Mrs H. Dampier-Crossley; vicepresidents, Mesdames A. H. Baker, S. Heard, H. Lunn, Miss Brown, and Mr H. A. Nielsen; captain, Mrs W. D. Jelfs; secretary and treasurer, Mrs H. W. D. Rogers; committee, Mesdames J. Casserley, F. C. Forbes, L. Hofr, W. I D. Jelfs, J. H. McKie, and Mr J. H. I McKie; supervisor of the greens, Mr McKie; auditor, Mr H. T. Knight. The annual subscription was reduced to ss. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the auditor and secretary for their services. HAWARDEN There was a large attendance at a dance held in the Kanuka woolshed under the auspices of the Peaks Tennis Club. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Crean and Mr B. Morrison. A Monte Carlo v/altz was won by Miss M. Wright and Mr R. Manning, and a balloon dance by Miss M. Munro and Mr Manning. Music was supplied by Mr C. L. Suridge, extras being played by Mrs H. E. Fincham and Miss P. Manning. , CHEVIOT The monthly meeting of St. John's Ladies' Guild, Cheviot, was held on Thursday afternoon at the residence of Mrs A. C. Fuller, who presided. Messrs W. A. Douglas and C. England, as delegates from St. John's vestry, waited on the ladies' guild in reference to the annual bazaar and flower show, which it was decided to hold on December 16 in the Public Hall to raise funds in support of the church. The ladies' guild has again decided to provide afternoon tea on the golf links on closing day, and to make a charge of Is. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Fuller. • t AMBERLEY A bridge and euchre evening was held under the auspices of the Amberley sub-branch of the Plunket Society at the home of Mr and Mrs W. Briggs, "Pinebank," Amberley. The winners of the bridge tournament were Mrs R. H. Harris, Mrs J. Schofield, and the Itcv. E. E. Maldin. The euchre tournament winners were Mrs P. W. Feathery, Messrs C. Wyllie, and I. F. Croft. At the conclusion of the games Mr I. G. Grierson expressed thanks ana appreciation to Mr and Mrs Briggs for the use of their home for the occasion, and his remarks were endorsed by those present singing "For They are Jolly Good Fellows." Mr Briggs briefly responded. ISLINGTON At the flying fifty billiards tournament conducted by the Islington Welfare Committee, the winner was Mr L. Finnie, and the runner-up Mr J. Bell. The weekly social held in the Islington Hall was well attended. Winners of competitions were Mrs W. Freeman and Mrs A. Fuller. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs B. Keane and Mrs J. Bryce.

LOBURN The monthly meeting of the Loburn Fruit Growers' Association was held in : Loburn Hall, Mr Macleod presiding ; over a good attendance. Mr Carolyn spoke on spraying and spray materials. The fortnightly card social was held in the hall. Visitors from Ashley were present. Tables were arranged for live hundred and euchre. The winners were: Five hundred. Miss Patty Henry and Mr J. D. Galletly, and Miss E. Brady and Mr B. Swift; euchre, Miss Norma Pulley and Mr R. Hughey, and Mrs G. Webb and Mr A. Lindsay. WOODEND To raise funds for the spring flower show, a social was held in the Woodend Anglican Sunday School. Mr J. Soulhen supplied the music for dancing, and Miss Alison Gillman played an extra. Competitions were won by Mrs F. Morriss and Master Ron Little. Mr J. King gave a piano solo. A mystery parcel was won by Mrs Southcn. Mrs F. Moore and Mr Ben Edcr were successful in the statue dance. There was a large attendance of mothers and babies at the September meeting of the Woodend-Waikuku subbranch of the Plunket Society, at which Mrs J. Henshaw presided. U was reported that the articles asked for by the matron of Kantane Home had been procured and dispatched. Nurse Shepherd, who has been on a month's sick leave, was welcomed back, and congratulated on her recovery. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames F. Stokes and L. o. Taylor. HORNBY The monthly meeting of the Hornby Women's Institute was held at the Parish Hall on Thursday afternoon. Mrs C. Rugg presided over a good attendance of members. Two new members were welcomed, Mesdames Schofield and D. Mackie. The competition for an article made out of an old felt hat resulted: Mrs R. Hepburn 1. Mrs 5 Lennox 2. Mrs Richards (Christchurch) gave a demonstration on the making of dolls out of stockings. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames R. Hepburn and A. The annual report showed that the club had a very successful season, tying with Tai Tapu for the shield. A playoff was drawn. The balance-sheet showed a small credit. BROADFIELD A coin afternoon in aid of the Springston Methodist parsonage was held recently at the residence of Mrs W. Wallace (Broadfield). There was a large attendance, and the amount raised exceeded expectations. Games, competitions, and musical items were enjoyed, after which afternoon tea was served by the hostess, assisted by her two daugnters, Misses G. and M. Wallace. A hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Wallace was passed. Musical items were given by Hiss J. Collier (Christchurch), and competitions were won by Mesdames F. Ridge, R. Early, C. Early, Coleman, and Guilford, and Misses J. Collier and E. Larcombe. ROLLESTON There was a good attendance at the weekly social and dance held in the Rolleston Memorial Hall. The competition winners were: Women, Mrs C. Chambers 1, Mrs Burgess 2. Men: Mr S. Dallard 1, Mr G. Alfeld 2. The dance music was supplied by the Burgess-Serra Band, extras being played by Mrs G. Wilson and Mr Healey. Mr S. Cross was the master of ceremonies. Miss Poyntin. of Burnham. is at present the school mistress at Rolleston in place of Mrs Phelan, who has retired after several years as teacher. Miss Ngairc Willetts, of Rolleston, who has been the guest of Mrs Gallagher (Gloucester street, Christchurch), has returned home. Mr Morgan Manning, of Mcthven, who has been staying with Mr and Mrs W. Willetts (Rolleston), has returned home. SHEFFIELD The members of the Sheffield Women's Institute held a party in honour of Miss Townshend, whose marriage will take place shortly. A piano and violin duet was given by Misses M. and J. Clinton, and songs by Mesdames J. Brown, C. Eaves, and Miss M. Clinton. Community singing was held. Mrs D. Tooms was the winner of a competition. Mrs W. Deans, on behalf of the members, made a presentation to Miss Townshend. Afternoon tea was served by members of the committee.

SPRINGSTON SOUTH The monthly meeting of the Springston Women's Institute was held in the Springston South Hall. Mrs J. W. Kime presided. Mr R. Nairn gave a lecture and demonstration on horticulture. The competition for a vase of spring flowers resulted:—Mrs T. J. Kimber 1, Miss Jean Marshall 2, and Mrs A. Hughes 3. Mr and Mrs Nairn judged the flowers. It was decided not to send a delegate to the conference at Greymouth. The hostesses were Mesdames Mcßean, Collins, Powell, Archbold, and Kime, and Misses Mcßean and Rowell. , The Wakaipa Basketball Club heid a "hard up" social in the Springston South Hall. Prizes were won as follows:—Best hard-up costume: Women, Miss Mona Carter 1, Miss E. Huriord 2; men, Mr Bissett 1, Mr F. Eggclton presided oyer the monthly meeting of the Southbridge Women's Institute, at which there was a good attendance. Consideration was given to an invitation to send delegates to the half-yearly meeting of the provincial federation to be held at Greymouth on September 25, but it was decided that the institute should not send a delegate. The roll-call, "My Favourite Colour Combination." was well responded to. Invitations to birthday parties arranged by other institutes, and to a social afternoon, were accepted. a demonstration on sewing machines was given by an expert. The hostesses were Mesdames R. G. Bishop, H. Montgomery, and E. F. Davison, and Missc B. Patterson and M. Schnclle. At a meeting of the committee or the Southbridge Horticultural Society, i over which the president, Mr M. Schnelle, presided, motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of Messrs John Carter, J. Malcolmson, and R. B. B. Willis. Recommendations made by a sub-committee in regard to prize-money alterations were adooted, and the schedule of classes for the annual show .vas revised. Clasb stewards were also ap- ointed. i The honour of its victory m the Ellesmere Sub-Association's competition, the Southbridge Ladies' Hockey Club's senior team was entertained at a banquet on Thursday evening by ihe girls' Darents and supporters, a very pleasant evening being spent. Congratulations were extended to the team by Mr R. C. Shearer, president of the club, who presided, and Misses Greenall (senior captain) and Wylie (junior captain) responded. A dance was afterwards held, Mrs A. Adams supplying the music. Mr McEvedy played an extra. Mr Shearer v/as master of ceremonies, and the gathering concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." LEESTON The se:ond birthday parly of the Lccston Women's Institute, held at the town hall, was largely attended. Other institutes represented included Ladbrooks, Prcbbleton, Lincoln, Springston, Brookside, and r.outhbridgc. A good deal of time and thought had been given to the preparations for the party, the hall and stage being tastefully decorated. A cordial welcome was extended to the visitors on thenarrival by the vice-presidents Mesdames T. M. Holley and R. C. Candy, and later the president, Miss A. Parkin, expressed pleasure at seeing so many present, and stated that the year had been a successful one for the institute the membership of which had steadily increased. The president referred to the year's activities, and said that tne institute had always been ready to assist any cause for the good of the district. A bouquet was presented to Miss Parkin by Merle Candy. An enjoyable programme was presented, including the following items: Instrumental trio, Misses Bowis; songs, Mrs G. H. Ryde, Mrs L. T. Harvey, Mrs L. C. Vicary, and Miss N. Beamsley recitation, Mrs Vicary; accordion solo Mrs F. B. Clausen; duet in character, Mesdames Candy and Harvey; one-act play, Mesdames F. B. Clausen, L T. Harvey, and A. G. Barker, and Misses C. Johnston, J. Holley, and S. Bowis. A trophy for the winner of the largest number of competitions during the year was presented to Mrs W. H. Cartwright by the president. Occupying a prominent position on the stage was a birthday cake made by Mrs W. Martin and iced by Miss S. Bowis. After supper had been served the cake was cut by the president and portions were distributed to all present. Later a dance was held, the Imperial dance orchestra supplying the music, and Mr J. R. Godsell acting as master of ceremonies. The monthly meeting of the Ellesmere branch of the Plunket Society was presided over by Mrs W. O. Rennie, president. Reports on violet day were received, and these were considered very satisfactory. Votes of thanks were accorded to all who had assisted. The nurse's report stated that 24 mothers and 24 babies had attended at the Leeston rooms and 11 at Southbridge. It was agreed that the nurse should be in attendance at the society's tent on Ellesmere show day. TAI TAPU Mr J. Gilmour presided over a fair attendance of members of the Tai Tapu and districts branch of the Farmers' Union at a meeting held in the Greenpark Hall. Mr H. W. Mcintosh, president of the Springston branch, gave an outline of a scheme for improved marketing of fat pigs. LITTLE RIVER A concert in aid of St. John's Church | was held in the Town Hall on Thurs- j day evening. The organisers were Mrs Leo Fahey and Miss Margaret Keenan. The following contributed items: Mesdames L. M. Fahey and J. H. Cocks, Misses W. Stott, K. Brady, M. Keenan, L. Colville, N. Penberthy, Helen Keenan, and Joan Meehan, Messrs J. H. Cocks, H. Shaw, J. Darragh, P. Geddes, G. Geddes, McMullen, Masters Reuel Goodwin and Keven Radford. A one-act play "The Wedding Mix-up" was very popular. The parts were taken by Misses N. Dutton, M. Brankin, G. Louden. N. Brankin, M. Webster, and N. Barclay. Community singing was led by Mr C. E. Steans, the accompanist being Miss E. Harty.
