SOCIETY FOR IMPERIAL CULTURE.

There was a large gathering of members and friends at a meeting of the Society for Imperial Culture on Saturday evening. Professor James Shelley presided. The lecture for the evening was given by Mr V. R., J. Hean, assistant city architect, on "Modern Architecture." Musical items were given by Miss Elizabeth Tipping. Miss Christobel Bowen. and Mr Ernest Rogers. Miss Betty Hannam was accompanist.

Hrs Macfarlane and Misses Marjorie and Marion Macfarlane, Auckland, left by the Aorangi last week for a trip to Suva. The Misses Macfarlane arc well known in tennis and golf circles throughout the Dominion, and have many friends in Christchurch. Miss van Asch van Wijck. world president of the Young Women's Christian Association, arrived in Wellington from the south on Saturday morning. The committee of the New Zealand Freezing and Allied Industries Officers' Guild has issued invitations for a dance to be held at the Frascati on Tuesday, August 8. Dr. and Mrs F. W. Hclmore returned on Saturday from a visit to Mr and Mrs Gordon Minhinnick, Takapuna, Auckland. Miss Helen C. Imric, a former; president of the Presbyterhn i Women's Missionary Union at St. Andrews, was the speaker at a wellattended meeting of the Women's Association of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, held at Wellington. She will remain in Wellington for some weeks. Miss Aileen Knight (Winchester street) wUI leave for the north tonight. She will spend a fortnight in Gisborne before proceeding to Whangarei to take up an appointment as nurse inspector under the Health Department. Miss M. G. HUNT CLUB RACES.

SUNSHINE AND WIND. Many visitors from the city and the I country were attracted to Ricearton on Saturday for the Christchurch Hunt Club's steeplechase meeting, which was held under very pleasant conditions. Tlij sun shone brightly, and the wind, though keen, was not strong enough to be troublesome. The well arranged and varied programme proved most interesting, and those keen race-goers, who were anxious to gleam information thai will lead them to fortune during Grand National Week, felt that their time was veil spent. BALL AT HALSWELL.

The annual ball organised by the women of the Halswell district was held on Thursday. Streamers, balloons, and evergreens decorated the hall for the occasion. The grand march was led by Miss Ivy McLeod and Mr W. Kelly. Novelty dances were won by Mrs I. Webley and Mr P. Wall, Mrs Gabbatis and Mr H. Cox, sen. Dance music was supplied by Fred. Annually, on the eve of presenting New Zealand debutantes at Buckingham Palace, Lady Wilford has always given an afternoon reception at her house in Chelsea. This week, her "at home" took place at St. James's Court, Buckingham Gale, and it was very largely attended. Among the guests were Mrs G. W. Forbes, Mrs Masters, Countess Jellicoe, and Miss Ishbel MacDonald. Miss Isabel Wilford, the recipient of numerous congratulations on the recent announcement of her engagement, helped her mother to entertain the guests, as also did Mrs H. L. Milsom (the daughter of the Hon. W. E. Collins, M.L.C., and Mrs Collins, Wellington). Lady Wilford wore ecru lace, and Miss Wilford was in a becoming dress of black. They both again spoke of the splendid time they had had recently in the Dominion. BALL AT SOUTHBRIDGE. The annual ball, held by the Southbridge Football Club, in the Town Hall on Thursday night, proved very successful. About 500 guests, including visitors from Oamaru, Ashburton, Lauriston, Methven, and Christchurch, enjoyed the hospitality of club members. Credit is due to the committee of the club, with Mr A. Carroll as president, and Mr W. T. Nidd as honorary secretary, for the excellent arrangements made to ensure a very pleasant entertainment. Supper was served by the ladies. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers, and the club's banner and one of the Ellesjoere Sub-Union shields were prominently displayed. Dance music was supplied by the Evans-Campbell Band, and Lambie's Band played the supper extras. Masters of ceremonies were Messrs G. Burt, S. McCartin, and R. Patterson. Mr A. Carroll, president, and Miss Gertie Carroll led the grand march. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Jean Searle and Mr W. Inwood. During an interval the president of the club presented the Jock Patterson Memorial Cup, awarded annually to the most useful member of the club, to Mr Murray Scott. LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB'S DANCE.

The first dance arranged by the committee of the New Brighton Rugby League Football Club was held in the Pier Hall on Saturday. The music was supplied by Shackel's Orchestra, and Mr N. DANCE AT REDCLIFFS. Mr and Mrs H. P. Le Page and family, who have lived at Redcliffs for the last 12 years, and who are moving to the city, were entertained by the residents on Saturday evening at a card party and dance in the Community Hall.
