CANTERBURY MARKETS.

I A QUIET WEEK. Friday Evening. Tliere is little- change; in the,' potato market. Tin; local enquiry is a shadebrighter, but the North is still comparatively silent. The Wingattii sailed during the week with an average lo small cargo, and the V/aipiata will load at Timaru on Tuesday, and Lyttclton on Wednesday. Value.-, rangeabout £a 2s (id f.o.b. s-.i., fur ]jroni]jt. or £4 on trucks, and August-Septem-ber £5 12s 6d 1'.0.b., s.i. It is reported that Dunedin is drawing supplies from Southland, from which point a few | very small shipments were- made North this season, in comparison with 'heavy dispatches from Southland Inst year. It is considered that the southern production will be absorbed in Dunedin and southwards this year. There were rumours in the trade during the week, thai a further shipment to South America was probable, but there is no verification of the report. The substantial drop in prices may enable a resumption in export, although the tone of (he market shows no indication of it. r'armers are not offering freely, and this has arrested the 'rop that* developed earlier in the week. Fowl feed is unaltered at 3s oUI to Ms 6d f.0.b.. s.e. There is tie) change and very little business in oats or chaff. A Cartons are worth 2s (id to 2s Tel Lvtlelton. and 2s 4d Din IV. tjiiot.itions. IX MiIMV DUXFDI.Y, July 2ft. It is reported that as a consecpience of the tinning of milling wheat in theoverseas markets, the Wheat Purchase Board lias decided to make several sales of surplus New Zealanel wheat. In the meantime no interest is being displayed in milling wheat for requirements in the Dominion, as the millers, are stili weirking on thenstocks. The fowl wheat market has \ become quieter. There now appear.-: to be plenty of this class available, and values are inclined to ease, both for shipment, to the North Island and t>n tiie trucks at country sidings. Dun-e-din merchants have been securing the bulk of (heir reejuircme-nts from SouthI land, where a great proportion of the: crops fiid not. grade f.u.u. milling, consequent on the wet weather. The- present value of [owl wheat is 3s (Jd io 3s 9d a bushel, sacks extra, ex truck. Tiie value of milling wheal for the month of August is 3s fid for Tuscan, 3s lOd for Hunters, and -is for Velvet. The oat market continues depressed, with practically no business passing. Only an oe-casional small order is being received for shipment to the North Island, and even with the lower yields to the: acre this season, there seem to be- too many oats available for the consumptive tleinanel. There are 1 , however, not many oat.: e)n ofTer from farmers, but amnio stocks are he-lel in t\\v store.-: to meet all rcepiiremenls. The present, shiporng values are about 2s M f.0.b., s.i., for A's. and hj; lOd to 2s for B's. These prices arc eepiivalenl to Is -Id lo lstid, sacks extra, on trucks, country sidings, fur As, the latter price being; for heavy lines, with B's worth Is lo Is 2d on trucks in the country. The demand for chad is on the quiet side-, and sales are being confined to small lots, ex store. A failquantity is still available, having been drawn from Canterbury early in the season, and an occasional truck load comes in from the surrounding dis-ti-.'ets. The current value is £3 10s to .£3 15s a ton, sacks extra, for truck lots, and £4 to £4 5s a ton ex stores. The potato market has further weakened, and the shipping value in Dunedin lias dropped to £5 5s a ton, f.0.b., s.i. There has been general pressure on the part of holders to sell, as they do not wish to have to pick over their lines be I ore placing them. The local value: for good potatoes is from £5 to £5 10s a ton, sacks included, ex truck. Canterbury merchants who purchased stocks in Dunedin earlier in the season have been reolTcring their holdings <o local buyers at a shilling parity. The seeds market remains quiet, with Jillle business passing. It should not be long before the spring demand for seeds for sowing sets in, and it is expected that there will then be a revival in the trade. Stocks of most seeds are not over plentiful, and it is considered that with the anticipated heavy sowing there should be a sound market. ASHBURTON MARKET.
