One hundred trees, provided by Mr T. E. Thomson, have been planted in Thomson's Park. Band Hall. * The authorised additions and improvements to the Band Hall have been put in hand and will include the lengthening of the floor space, in addition to the provision of new cloaK <- rooms and kitchen accommodation. * House of Action. The week has been uneventful for the members of the Action Club, as the organisation is now so perfect that the supplying and serving of between i 1700 and 1800 meals and bowls ot s soup a week creates no difficulty. The <• number on the roll now exceeds 100, and several serious cases of distress i have been discovered among famines (r which had previously abstained from J seeking any relief. ; Gifts of jam, apples, and potatoes i are urgently needed. Several sewing parties have i met at the house during the week, i and have given valued assistance, . whilst the local residents and shop- . keepers have forwarded much-needed J supplies. ; Women's Christian Temperance Union. ] The monthly meeting of the New Brighton branch of the Women s Christian Temperance Union was well attended, Mrs M. Moses presiding. A motion of sympathy with Messrs H. Mcllroy and C. Deans was carried. The treasurer reported that £2, the collection taken up at the birthday social, had been given to the Mayors Relief Fund. A "Penny Exchange Pudding Recipe" was a novelty item for the afternoon. Songs, accompanied on the autoiiarp, were given by Mrs D. B. Ashford. A "Bring and Buy" stall was held In aid of the branch funds. Mothers' Union. The monthly meeting of St. Faith's branch of the Mothers' Union was held in the schoolroom on Thursday, with a good attendance. _ Instead of the usual address an interesting letter from Mrs K. H. Mathlas, the founder of the local branch, was read Five original members were present at the meeting. Mrs Mathias, now living at Torquay, still finds time to keep in touch with the three branches she did so much for in Canterbury. Lodge Meetings. The fornightly meeting of the Sunshine Tent was held on Tuesday evening, when Bro. J. Littlewood preM Chief Ruler, Sister H. Cockle, presided over a fair attendance at the Star of New Brighton Tent, held on Tuesday. Reports on the Canterbury provincial council and the Pride of Christchurch anniversary were given by the secretary Bro. A E Cockle and Sister I. Hull were elected assistant superintendents to the Sunshine Tent and Sister Hull was also elected auditor of the Juvenile Tent. Community Singing. The weekly community singing held in the Pier Hall on Mondays for various local charities, and organised by Mrs H. A. Bishop, will give the proceeds of next week's effort to the funds of the New Brighton centre of the Red Cross Society. Social Evenings. The president of the Bowling Club (Mr C. T. Middleton) presented the prizes to Mesdames Ralph Stringer, Chris. Smith, and Mr W. F. E. Barrett who v/ere the successful competitors at the progressive whist evening' held in the club pavilion on TuesThe weekly card evening and dance arranged by the sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, held in the Pier Hall, were held on Tuesday this week. The winners at cards were Messrs D. S. Turner and OCrawford, and Miss K. Jackson, Mrs Savage and Mrs E. Jones being equal for second place. The Monte Carlo was won by Mrs S. Hamilton and Mr H. Skipworth. Mr Fuller played the dance music and Mr S. E. Hamilton was master of ceremonies. At the school committee card evening on Thursday prizes were won by Messrs F. Larcombe, Bernstein, sen., F J. Wigg, and Mesdames J. Phillips, E. F. Philpott, and W. Langley. Methodist Choir. On Wednesday evening the members of the Linwood Salvation Army Band gave a vocal and instrumental concert in the Methodist Hall on behalf of the choir fund. Mr Clark was bandmaster. There was a very good | attendance. Secondary School Football. The open grade in the secondary school competition was won by New Brighton by default from St. Bedes. The light-weights were beaten by Technical by 8 points to 3 points. L. Hay scored the try for New Brighton. i The primary school competition is now finished and the boys are busy practising for the annual seven-a-side tournament, which will be played on ' the first Friday in August. ' Registered Unemployed. Another increase in the number of unemployed in the borough is shown 1 this week, the registrations now numbering 371. Eelief Depot. Ensign A. E. Barker, of the Sal--1 vation Army, has accepted the position of secretary of the New Brighton : branch of the Metropolitan Relief ' Committee. The Rev. D. B. Ashford, who agreed to fill the position temporarily, expressed his wish to be relieved of the position. Miniatnre Rifles. The New Brighton Ladles' Miniature Rifle Club fired a match against Mar- . ist Old Boys at New Brighton this week, the Marist team winning by two points. Following were the scores:—New Brighton—Mrs Ragg 64, Miss Corser 69, Mrs Caldwell 68, Mrs Stokes 64, Miss Hill 68, Mrs Moses 68, Mrs Buschl 67, Mrs Ball 67; total 535. Marist Old Boys—W. Lennie 68, F. Gaynor 68, B. O'Connell 66, A. Mulford 66, J. Johnston 67, L. Walker 67, J. Shaab 67, H. O'Connell 68; total 537 The New Brighton Club has entered one team in the junior championships, to • be decided in Christchurch this week, and will be represented by Miss C. Corser, Mrs E. Caldwell, Mrs J. Buschl, and Mrs M. Moses. NORTH BEACH. Progress League. Organised by the social committee of the North Beach Progress League and Beautifying Association, the carni' val dance held in the Peace Memorial Hall at North Beach proved a considerable success. The decorations of coloured streamers and balloons, arranged by Messrs T. E. Welsh and C. F. Scott, added much to the gaiety of the function. Mesdames T. E.. Thom-

son, C. F. Scott, D. Gadd, A. Taylor, and Miss L. Archibold were in charge of the supper arrangements, and Messrs T. E. Thomson and C. F. Scott were masters of ceremonies. Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Maisie Ottey, assisted by Mr Fred Arnold. An extra was played by Miss Leila Archibold. Chapman and partner, and the Monte Carlo number by Mr D. Sum-, merfield and partner. Card Evening. At the North Beach Surf Club card evening this week there was a good attendance. The winners were Mr W. Kennedy and Mrs T. Hodgson. ■ School Activities. The North Beach school football team has won the junior schools' competition. The team played and won six games, scored 147 points, and had only three points scored against them. The girls' basketball team replayed the match against Linwood Avenue school this week, the game resulting in a win for North Beach by 7 goals to 6. The team will now have to meet the winner of the West Christchurch versus Fendalton match on Friday next. Preparations are going on apace lor the coming school display.
