GUIDE NOTES.

[By THE PROVINCIAL SECRETARY.] Appointments. Miss M. Morten, of Mount Pleasant, has been appointed district commissioner for the East Christchurch district. Mrs S. Trail, district commissioner, Banks Peninsula, has been appointed provincial camp advisor for Canterbury. Mrs H. Mcintosh, captain of the Kaiapoi guide company, has been appointed district captain of the North Canterbury district, and Miss I. Hoyle has been appointed district secretary. Miss I. Laine, Cambridge terrace company, and Miss I. Pawson, Merivale company, have passed their captain's warrant test papers. Badge Examinations. The needlewoman's badge examination was held in the guide office yesterday. The examiner, Mrs W. Day, reported, that the standard of the work submitted for examination had greatly improved, with the exception of the darning test, in which several guides failed. The results of the examination will be published in this column next Saturday, several guides having still to complete their tests. Evelyn Coote, of the First Canterbury post guide company has passed both the health and writer's badge examinations. The examiners in both cases reported on the very high standard of her work. Evelyn was formerly a guide in the Addington company, and she hopes to be allowed to walk next work, with the aid of crutches. The following guides of the Opawa company have qualified for the child nurse badge:—Freda Stephenson, L. Walton, N. Glasson, A. Ramsay, Valmai Mcintosh, Violet Macintosh, E. Johns, P. Harrington, M. Harvey, A. Mcllroy, B. Brownlees, M. Atkins, and L. Oberg. J. Dorizac, of the Linwood company, also qualified for the badge. The following guides of the Heathcote company have qualified for the health badge: B. Morgan, A. Cogle, G. Woods, and C. Woods. The examiner reports that A. Cogle gained 100 per cent, of marks. Nan Gardiner, of the Rakaia company, has passed both the scribe and needlewoman's badge examinations. East Christchurch District Meeting. A meeting of all guiders in the East Christchurch district will be held on Thursday next, August 3, at 6.45 p.m. in the jockey club rooms, before the combined training session. Miss Mcllraith, divisional commissioner, will preside, and all guiders are asked to make a special effort to attend. Visit of Deputy-Chief Commissioner. Guiders are again reminded of the visit of Miss Herrick, deputy-chief commissioner for New Zealand. On Thursday, August 3, Miss Herrick will visit the ,guiders* training school, and on Friday, August 4, at St. juke's schoolroom, at 7.30 p.m, Miss Herrick will attend the "camp fire" evening for guiders, rangers, and patrol leaders. For Thursday, guiders are asked to wear ordinary uniform, with blue shirts, and on Friday evening full uniform, with white shirts. East Belt Guide Company. This company is now in its third year, and has a membership of 24 j guides. During the autumn a competition among the patrols was held. Each patrol was required to collect a variety of leaves, which were displayed in books. Much interest was taken, and the Kiwi patrol was declared the winner. The district captain, Miss Maxwell, recently visited the company and enrolled three guides. Three second-class badges were awarded, and two guides received their second stars and two their first stars. For the leaf collecting

competition, Miss Maxwell presented the Kiwi patrol leader with a copy of 'Gloria's Book." An enjoyable evening was spent with games, singing, and supper. Woodbury Guide Company. We wish to acknowledge a further issue of the company's well-known gazette, which is of the high standard of the former issues. It is pleasing to know of the continued progress and good work of this company.
