MR GIRLING BUTCHER.

The death lias occurred of Mr Girling Butcher, aged 72 years, formerly a well-known journalist, who was attached to the staffs of the London "Spectator," the "Daily Telegraph," and "The Times," London. Later, he was foreign correspondent for "The Times" at Paris, Venice, and St. Petersburg. Coming to the Dominion, he joined the staff of the "Otago Daily Times," and also worked on "The Press" and the Nelson "Colonist." He established the "Golden Bay Times," and was then engaged in free-lance work in Wellington for some years. He abandoned journalism and joined the Mines Department. Later he became assistant secretary to the Rt. Hon. R. J. Seddon, and was also on the staff of Hansard. He retired from the Public Service in 1916. MR J. The death occurred to-day of Mr Jacob Mitchell, manager of the Oamaru branch pf the Taieri Peninsula Dairy Company, one of Oamaru's best-known citizens. Mr Mitchell was born in the Woodhaugh Valley, Dunedin. He was employed by the company for 41 years, winning for it seven cups and medals in the national butter making championship competitions. Mr Mitchell was an exceedingly bright personality, who made many friends throughout the South Island. He was perhaps best known on the bowling greens. He was a member and former president of the Phoenix Club, and a past president of the North Otago Centre. He wa6 keenly interested in Rugby, a member of the trotting and jockey Clubs, of Masonic Lodge, Waitaki, of Foresters' Court Pride of Oamaru, the council of North Otago Scottish Society's Pipe Band, and of the fire brigade. His death followed a long illness. He is survived by his widow, two brothers, a sister, three daughters, and a son, who lives in Christchurch.
