LOCAL HISTORY.

INSTITUTES TO COLLECT MATERIAL. If a recommendation embodied in a resolution carried at the Dominion conference of Women's Institutes yesterday is put into effect, Women's Institutes throughout the country will do valuable work in the collection of pioneer stories and accounts of historical incidents which have occurred in their neighbourhood. A resolution was carried as follows: "That all Women's Institutes where material is available be asked to collect pioneer tales and the old history of their own neighbourhood." "We all have pasts, and some of us might not like them to be delved into," said Miss N. Lewis, the Titirangi delegate, who supported the remit, "but we think this a very happy suggestion. If local institutes delve into the early histories of their districts, particularly about the work of women, a great body of early pioneering tales and incidents will be collected which will be of great value." Mrs C. Innes, representing Akaroa, said that the tales of the early pioneers of her district were embodied in that excellent little book, Tales of Banks Peninsular. If similar work could be done in other districts it would be a great asset to the community. The resolution was carried unanimously.
