INFORMATION ON BIRTH CONTROL.
REMIT KULED OUT BY WOMEN'S CONFERENCE. The annual conference of the Dominion Federation of Women's Institutes yesterday refused to discuss a remit: "That the Health Department be urged to provide information on birth control free of charge." The remit was brought forward by the executive of the Auckland Federation. A delegate from the back of the hall immediately raised a point of order, claiming that not only was the subject an extremely controversial one, but also that the whole question should be left to the conscience of the individual. She therefore asked that the remit be ruled out. The chairwoman (Miss Amy Kane) said that she was not prepared to give a ruling on such a point, and asked for the opinion of the conference. A delegate: I hope the reporters will be asked to leave the hall. (Laughter.) The chairwoman: It would be quite in order to discuss the remit in committee, but it has not yet been decided whether it shall be discussed at all. The chairwoman then called for a show of hands on the point of order, and it was decided, by an overwhelming majority of the 300 delegates present, to rule the remit out.
