A NEW RECORD.

COMMUNITY SINGING. AMOUNT OF £74 REALISED. The community singing session in the Civic Theatre yesterday in aid of the Relief of Distress Fund resulted in £74 12s 2d being realised, an amount that exceeds any amount realised at any of these sessions in Christchurch either this or last year. The previous record was on July 13, when the total from all sources was £64 10s, to which the collection contributed £3O 15s 7d. A special feature of yesterday's session was the presence of many of the delegates to the conference of the Federation of Women's Institutes for whom the greater portion of the dress! circle was reserved. To the collection, which totalled £42 15s 6d, the delegates contributed about £2O. The other revenue was: From sales of goods and from competitions, £2O 17s 6d, and from listeners £lO 19s 2d. The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, MP.) was present and made some appropriate remarks. Mr Alan Brown was song leader and Dr. F. C. A'Court was at the piano. The audience were delighted with the two songs at the piano contributed by Dr. Douglas Anderson. His encore number was an original humorous skit in which the Mayor, the Town Clerk, Mr Alan Brown, Dr. A'Court, and other notabilities were referred to. So far this season the Relief of Distress Fund has received from these community singing sessions the sum of £470 7s Bd, as compared with a total for the whole season last year of £502; in other words, almost as much as was received for the whole season last year has been realised this year, and only half the season has elapsed. ALLOCATION FROM ART UNION. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) has been allocated £64 for the relief of distress from the proceeds of the "Luck at Last" art union. The amount is the same as that received for the fund from the previous art union.

The meeting convened last evening by the Welfare Section of the Boy? Employment Committee to discuss the problem of unemployment amongst boys in the Waltham district had to be abandoned, for the only persons to attend were Mr A. J. McEldowney, two other officials of the Boys' Employment Committee, and two reporters. Last night's meeting was the second which had been arranged at the Waltham School, and the first meeting was postponed through similar lack of support from Waltham residents.
