That the various sub-committees working for the Citizens' Ball had made great progress with preliminary arrangements during the last two days, and that business men in the city, despite the many calls made upon them, were most generously disposed towards the ball, was reported at a meeting of the committee held at 5 p.m. yesterday in the office of the women's auxiliary of the Business Men's Committee. The ball will be held in the Caledonian Hall on Wednesday, August 9, and the proceeds will be given to the women's auxiliary of the Business Men's Relief Committee. Those present were Mr H. G. Vernon, George Aitken, George Weston, Misses Nonie Enright, Mary Menzies, Lois Ollivier, Celia Reese, Captain W. Murphy, Dr. Douglas Anderson, Messrs T. Milliken, R. L. Ronaldson. Owen Johnston, and G. Milne. It was decided that continuous music should be provided by Bradford's and Bennett's orchestras and that a letter be sent to the manager of Sinbad's band, thanking him for his generous offer of help. The decorations sub-committee reported that Mr M. J. Barnett had consented to help with the decorating of the hall and the executive of the Canterbury Officers' Club had offered to lend lamp-shades. The matter of obtaining the loan of furniture was left to the sub-committee, who will deal with the matter to-day. Many Gifts Promised. Captain Murphy said that he had obtained free of charge the tea, coffee, and milk for the ball supper. A hot supper would be provided. Mr Milne, for the buffet sub-committee, detailed the arrangements which had been made for the sale of oysters at a buffet under the stage. Dr. Anderson reported having received a generous gift from Messrs Maling and Company and Miss Havelaar reported that Fuller Brothers had printed 600 tickets free of charge. The committee having gone carefully into the matter of expense, decided that the price of single tickets should be 6s each, instead of ss, as previously suggested. The tickets will be for sale in the city to-day.

WEDDING.

. RICKEY—ASHCROFT. The wedding was celebrated recently of Inez Alice, younger daughter of the Rev. Arthur Ashcroft and Mrs Ashcroft (Oxford), to Walter David, son of Mr and Mrs D. Rickey (Waipukurau). The ceremony, performed by the Rev. William Grigg, took place in the dining-room of the Methodist parsonage, the home of the bride's parents. Wedding music was played by Miss Jean Comyns. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a frock of white satin beaute, and an embroidered net veil, sent from India by Nurse Sage, of the Punjab missionary hospital, and she carried a sheaf of arum lilies. After the ceremony the guests were received by Mrs Ashcroft, who was wearing a brown suit and a velour hat to tone. The decorative scheme throughout the rooms was carried out with chrysanthemums, narcissi, and daphne, and vases of freesias, parma violets, and primroses brightened the tables. For travelling the bride wore a musquash coat over a frock of brown crepe romaine, made with a deep yoke, and sleeves of vari-coloured silk. Her hat was of velour to tone. Later, Mr and Mrs W. D. Rickey left for Wellington to join the Makura for Sydney.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES OF FREEMASONS.

Freemasons are expecting a season of great social activity arising from tile installation of Dr. F. A. Maguire as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of New South Wales (wrote the Sydney correspondent of the Melbourne "Argus," on July 20). The installation will be of special impressiveness. Grand Masters are expected from all other states and from New Zealand. Among the social events during their stay, will be the fortieth annual Masonic ball on August 3. This will be attended by the Governor-General and Lady Isaacs and the Governor and Lady Game. It is announced that already 80 debutantes are on the list to be presented. The ball will add some needed money to the Freemasons' Benevolent Institution, generally called the F. 8.1. There is interesting speculation upon the work that will be associated with Dr. Maguire's term of office. Mr William Thompson established as the coping-stone of his, career of eight years as Grand Master the Masonic village for orphans, on the hills north-east of Parramatta. Mr John Goulson arranged for the Masonic Hospital at Ashfield. Mr Aubrey Halloran, the third of the more recent Grand Masters opened it. Dr. Maguire may devote himself to the financing of these institutions, rather than to the creation of new ones.
