WOMEN'S TEMPERANCE UNION.
CHRISTCHURCH BRANCH. Miss Henderson presided at the usual fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Temperance facts were read to show that as alcohol was a racial poison, the harmful effects from the use of it were passed down from generation to generation. A sufficient number of members promised to assist with the orphanages street collection to make it possible to man a corner all day. Miss Blackwell gave a report of the splendid work being done by the women at the relief depot. During the last four months the union had sent 18 parcels of sorted and mended clothing to the depot, and more than 30 parcels of gifts of groceries had been brought by members to the meeting to be sent to the depot. To celebrate the T. E. Taylor memorial day, Miss Henderson gave some interesting information about past presidents of the union since its formation in May, 1885. At the close of this address members stood for a few minutes to honour their memory. During the afternoon songs were sung by Mrs Goode and Miss Round. Mrs Boschetti acted as accompanist. The president congratulated 'Mrs Israelsen, who celebrated her ninetysecond birthday anniversary yesterday. BECKENHAM LADIES' GUILD. A pleasant time was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs H. Heyward (Fisher street, Beckenham), when a "cup and saucer" gift party was held in aid of the ladies' guild of the Beckenham Methodist Church. Competitions, games, and community singing were enjoyed, and musical items were given by Mesdames G. A. Hayden, Stewart, and J. Scott, Messrs Young and F. W. Watson. Mrs Scott was the accompanist and Mr and Mrs F. W. Watson were masters of ceremonies. Among those present were Mr and Mrs H. Heyward, Mr and Mrs F. W. Watson, Mr and Mrs F. Allctt, Mr and Mrs A. Purves, Mr and Mrs W. R. Stephens, Mr and Mrs Barkman, Mr and Mrs Young, Mesdames Ballagh, w. Kent, Ward, Morrison, H. Mitchell, G- A - Hayden, J. Scott, Stewart, Read, C.
