FRENCH TARIFF. RAISED.
AMERICAN EXPORTS PENALISED. 'SUGGESTION OF TRADE WAR, (CMTED PRESS ASSOCI.VTTOS—BT £I.£CT&IC TELEU E A rn —COPYItIGH'i'.) (Received July 26', 7.40 p.m.) PARIS, July 26. France has dramatically increased the duties on about 60 classes of American imports by amounts reaching, in each case, 800 per cent. The question has been raised whether this is a breach of the tariff truce, and the beginning of a great trade war. The American Commercial Attache states that millions of dollars worth of American exports are affected by the tariff, which in many instances becomes prohibitive. The first notification was m a journal circulated among customs officials. It is understood that the increases are intended as a counter to the heavy fall of the dollar.
